Well if people are preferring the Maybach to the much cheaper Benz then the Maybach has done its job. It is supposed to be more car, better interior etc. etc. than the S-Class, it costs 3 times the price of a S550/500.

Yes that is true Merc1 ....but those of us who prefer the Maybach seem to be in the minority.

The S class/7er/A8 will compete against the "cheap" Rolls-Royces as they do against the Bentley Flying Spur.

Lets remember that before the Phantom and Maybach came along the S class was always seen as the main competitor for the Bentley Arnage and Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph.

I guess the new Rolls-Royces will be the equivalent of the old Silver Spirit/Silver Spur -- the old Phantom VI ended production in 1991, a technical dinosaur, yet it was more expensive than the Maybach 62 because it was entirely hand-made.

The S class offers every possible amenity anyone would require in a luxury car, I will be very intrigued to see what DCX come up with for the MM53 ...I would predict sales could be very slow unless they can build something very, very, special.

The S class offers everything you could possibly want.

I guess one could convincingly argue that a similar situation happened in the 1970's when Mercedes introduced the W116 in 1972 -- it was widely acclaimed as the best car in the world -- probably technically superior to the W100. However, the W100 (which was introduced in 1963) remained in production until 1981 and never lost any of it's prestige in that time -- so maybe the Maybach does have it's place afterall.

The W116 never overshadowed the W100 in spite of being almost a decade younger, more technically advanced and widely acclaimed as the "Best car in the world" ...I guess one could say the W100 was in a league of it's own.

W100 (1963 - 1981)

W116 (1972 - 1980)

There is a very good reason for that.

The 600 was somewhat unique.
It a more focused/pure uber-car, but its focus was not driving or performance, it was to provide a pure german/teutonic statemeship caracter/soul/image/feeling to the world's leaders.

It was the german interpretation of super-sedan for the heads of states.

The W116 S klasse moved somewhat beyond this. The previous S klasse was closer to the W100 tough.

Which S class are you referring to Imhotep Evil?

If you are referring to the top S class model (W112) 300SEL, it was designed to replace the (W189) 300 "Adenauer". However, the W189 was above the S class when it was in production.

Mercedes 300 "Adenauer" was above the S class of it's time.

This is the S class that was built at the time the 300 "Adenauer" was in production.

The W111 S class that replaced the "Ponton" model above -- these were the 220/220S/220SE. The car below is the basic "entry-level" model 220 - the more luxurious 220S/220SE has more chrome details and different front and rear lights.

In 1961, Mercedes offered the 300SE ...and it has a different W number, W112. It looks the same as the 220S/220SE but has a little more chrome detailing.

...and finally in 1963 the LWB 300SEL was introduced, it was intended to replace the 300 Adenauer, which ended production in 1962. Also that same year Mercedes launched the W100 limousine and so sales of the 300SEL were not very big.

I was talking about the W108/9.
They used the S/SE/SEL monikers.
It was the W116 the first oficial S class.
My bad.

Also the 300S was also a favorite of mine.

Obviously the Maybach is better. The S-Class, compared to anything in its range, is always at the top, but the Maybach trumps it in comfort, engineering, and even presence. Even though some people might consider the styling "bland" no one doesn't notice the car when it drives by.
