What a massive contrast between the white one with glossy silver rims and the matt finish grey with black rims. Huge power in an S-class. Who would think that Mercedes would ever launch an S-class with over 800PS.

The S450 in this test seems to be a very good example. It is as quick as the S500 from 0-100km/h in only 4.84sec (S500 - 4.9sec); 0-160km/h in just 10.71sec (S500 - 11.3sec) and 0-200km/h in 17.25sec (S500 in 18.2sec).

Consumption at cruising speeds is excellent, it only used 5.5l/100km at 100km/h, 7.2l/100km at 120km/h and 9.6l/100km at 160km/h.

I can’t believe how much of a disappointment this car turned out to be dynamically. So anticipated, so delayed, a basically a dud. I don’t know any reason why one would go for this rather than a simple 580 model.

It's a 5.2m long luxury barge.
It's not exactly competing with your E63S or M5s or Panamera Turbo S. It's not a sport sedan.

The AMG S classes have always been more private jets for the road, than dynamic sport sedans.

Not sure what else you were expecting from a damn-near 3 tonne behemoth.

^ Remarkable colour combination. Nice to see, that even the seat bins are leather wrapped. That’s not even mentioning the complete leathered boot. It makes it even more incomprehensible the Manufaktur doesn’t offer a satisfactory solution for the shiny, black plastic units for the power window switch gear and the seat adjustment unit.

That’s how it should have been from the beginning of the 223.

I was told that they used the shiny black plastic because it reminds them about the iPhone and iPad screens, and people think that’s premium. They simply didn’t expected the backlash.
