S-Class (W223) Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223) Facelift 2024

The Mercedes-Benz W223 is the seventh generation of the S‑Class full-size luxury sedan, produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2020. It replaces the W222 S‑Class which had been produced since 2013. Production: 2020- Model years: 2021-
Personally I have not yet sat inside never mind driven a W223, but from what I have read from the guys on this forum and international journalists, the driving experience and refinement levels are even better than the W222. This combined with the drivetrain, economy/emissions and performance improvements would definitely make the W223 the most complete S-class of them all. The exterior styling looks superb, especially from the rear. If they make substantial improvements to the interior, especially the quality of materials then it would be amongst the greats.

The fundamental engineering, NVH refinement, technological package etc.are outstanding.

Which W223 have you driven ? What kind of package did it have the Camera for analysing the road ? Cause i heard a lot of people are not happy with that technology on the new S Class cause there are less motors for the suspension and is actually worse on same kind of road harshness.

We have a W223 S450 riding on airmatic with 20 inch run flats.

We had a W222 S350d riding on airmatic with 19 inch run flats.

The cars are othwise identically specified other than the W223 coming with the obvious technological upgrades and massage seats.

Neither of the cars had/have the exclusive package upgrade and I would say our W223 and W222 are comparable in terms of interior. The surface finishes, dashboard, door etc. on our W223 are softer and better padded than the W222 and there's a better sense of thickness behind the surfaces. That's said the W222 is better finished in terms of trim edges, haptic quality of the HVAC controls, volume controls etc. The indicator controls are also superior in quality and haptic feel in the W222.

The AC vents are comparable in terms of functionality and tactile quality as are aspects such as the cupholder covers. The biggest weakness for the W223 here is the lack of alternative trims to the high gloss black on the transmission tunnel. I think this will be addressed in the FL as they are no longer trying to make a portait screen looks like it 'waterfalls' into the transmission tunnel.

The W222 feels maybe 10% more solid than the W223 in terms of underlying construction, but like I said previously, the W223s surfaces are generally better padded. The W222 does have a much more comfortable centre armrest, which is my biggest gripe with the W223s interior.

We owned the W222 for 3 years and have now had the W223 for 3.5 years. They are both comparable in terms of wear. The W222 had some rattling seat control buttons at this point. The W223 has no rattle issues presently, but did have a rattle from the HUD area which was addressed previously. There was 1 LED strip and 3 black gloss trims replaced under warranty as I was not satisfied with the finish at the edges and the LED had dull spots.

I much prefer the W223s steering wheel in terms of design and I am one of the very few who like the touch sensitivity. I think a blend of both would be an ideal outcome for ultimate control. That said MBUX is now so good you can operate the car almost entirely by voice command. As despised as the main display and driver display may be, they form IMO, by far the best vehicles UI system I have used in terms of intuition and adaptability. You may not like the graphics either, but the functionality is brilliant. MB OS should be brilliant and there is a reason Porsche has paoched MB's head of operating systems.

I understand anyone who prefers the design of the W222, however I prefer the W223. I love the huge slab of wood that blends into the doors. To me it looks a bit more technical and less baroque. The seats are even more comfortable in the W223 and the car is generally superior in pretty much every respect to the W222. Low speed and hide speed ride are superior as well as steering and handling. Noise suppression has also improved notably.

Electronics, sounds systems, heads up display, driver assistance systems etc are also leagues ahead in the W223. Its almost a 1.5 generation jump in some of these aspects.

I can compare so many aspects of the W223 and W222 and I appreciate those that prefer the more traditional approach of the W222 with ultimately finer finishes and switchgear tactility. But as a driving experience and a place to feel completely pampered in terms of safety, sound and vibration supresssion, audio quality, connectivity etc.the 223 is just exemplary.

I'm seriously hoping there is a coupe chop of the FL W223 as it would be the perfect replacement vehicle. My dad has a new car itch, but there is currently just nothing worth considering and he doesnt want to spend Bentley money. He looked at the new G and he loved the build, drive, visibility and sense of occasion, but ultimately he doesnt need a twin turbo V8, nor would it be safe IMO LOL. The climb in and out was not ideal either given his hip surgery.

Absolutely. If anyone is complaining about the ride and handling of the W223 compared to the W222, I would suspect it would have to do with a particular/peculiar tyre and rim combination.

Ive tried hard to get @Monster to replace their W213E with a W223, it's that good.

Thanks for your in depth comparison between the W222 and W223, certainly both are fantastic cars. Interesting comments about their interiors and build quality etc. So the W223 has its charms, I also like the dash design with the large piece of wood or trim on the passenger side and the vertical vents look cool.

Thank you for your deep review . So the S Class in run flats has much better ride quality than the previous with run flats. Have you tried but non run flat tires on they’re a game changer in ride quality like 30-40% better.

I have been so tempted to, because the ride would be superflous, but since it's my dad's primary and he is over 80, it's just peace of mind to have the run flats.

dear friends, the question is what Ola wants to do for the future S-class of 2030, will it be there or will it disappear?

There will always be an S. Whether its an ICE, Hybrid, EV or a combination, with or without different body styles, the S as a traditional saloon capable of accommodating executive rear seating is not going anywhere.

It's the SL I'm worried about disappearing as a nameplate. This is the last one that can fail and I don't believe it has been a success.

I can see they are trying to manipulate sales by removing the rear seats from the AMG GT in the American market, forcing 4 seat buyers into an SL.

26 year sales veteran of Mercedes. The W222 is a superior vehicle in terms of build quality. The things you mention are all periphery meaning they could improve the heads up and the infotainment.

Where did I say it wasn't? It's one factor though and that doesn't stop the W223 being a better overall vehicle.
