Mercedes-Benz, together with Hughes Telematics, is launching a new feature today that will allow owners of its vehicles access to a 18 different services via a nifty telematics system.

Called “mbrace”, the new system offers everything from a vehicle locator for crowded car parks, somebody to direct you if you get lost or even the ability to order online--all whilst sitting in the driver’s seat.

Similar to Ford’s Sync system and GM’s OnStar, mbrace also enables pairing of smart phones like iPhones and BlackBerrys to the car’s electronic interface. Drivers can then use their phones to lock or unlock their cars remotely.

Other services include automatic emergency service notification in case the car is stolen or in an accident, a vehicle health check function that goes live to the nearest dealership, real-time weather and traffic reports, and even a concierge service that gets you 24/7 access to a customer-service rep who will help you make dinner reservations, book a hotel or order a flight.

The mbrace system is being offered as standard equipment on all Mercedes-Benz models except the GLK, C-Class, SLK and the new E-Class Coupe, where it is being offered as an option. A subscription to the service is free for the six months, after which it will cost $280 a year. An additional $20 per month is needed for the concierge service.

What makes mbrace really stand out is that it is fully upgradable, with new applications easily installed as they are developed. Furthermore, most vehicle owners using the current Tele Aid telematics service can also upgrade to mbrace by visiting a Mercedes-Benz dealer.

Mercedes-Benz and Hughes release app-based "mbrace" telematics for iPhone, Blackberry

Mercedes-Benz has teamed up with Hughes Telematics to begin offering a new system that allows drivers to enable dozens of their vehicles features with their Apple iPhone or Blackberry.

Dubbed "mbrace," the telematics setup covers everything from locking and unlocking doors to contacting roadside assistance and pinpointing an mbrace-equipped Mercedes-Benz in a parking lot.

The system will be included on all new Mercedes products, and current customers with the automaker's outgoing Tele Aid system are eligible to retrofit their aging Mercs with mbrace. The technology could also be used to stream music from the web, upload video content and connect to users PCs, however, that's further down the road. The system is available now for $280 a year, and you can get all the details in the press release below the fold.

PRESS RELEASE

Mercedes-Benz USA and Hughes Telematics Launch New Telematics Service: mbrace(TM)

New in-vehicle technology lays the foundation for unprecedented connectivity and customization options for drivers, improving safety, security and productivity

Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) and Hughes Telematics, Inc. (HTI) today launched mbrace(TM), a new telematics offering that brings an unprecedented level of connectivity to Mercedes-Benz drivers and begins the process of allowing them to customize their in-vehicle experiences to fit their daily needs. Powered by HTI, mbrace is now available on all new Mercedes-Benz vehicles sold through authorized dealers in the United States, and mbrace replaces Tele Aid, which was the previous telematics system that MBUSA has offered for the past 10 years, for such vehicles. In addition, most current Mercedes-Benz owners with the Tele Aid system will be eligible to upgrade to the new mbrace system.

"When we first launched our Telematics platform it contained features many vehicles still lack today, and now we want to take our offering to the next level," said Sascha Simon, director of advanced product planning, MBUSA. "With mbrace, we begin the introduction of a whole new generation of innovative and personalized services that fit our drivers' mobile lifestyles, keeping them connected to the people, places and services that are important to them and offering them enhanced safety, security and navigation options. Most importantly, the flexibility of Hughes Telematics' architecture will also allow us to continually add new features and innovations that will keep Mercedes-Benz on the forefront of in-vehicle services."

Specifically, mbrace personifies "connected services" by marking the first time drivers can connect with their vehicles via an iPhone(TM) or BlackBerry(TM), allowing them to do such things as remotely lock or unlock their vehicles or locate their vehicles in crowded parking lots or on city streets through a map representation on their smart phones. The flexibility of combining HTI's platform with today's leading smartphone offerings allows for a continual stream of in-vehicle innovation throughout the life of a vehicle's ownership.

"Hughes Telematics is excited to be working with Mercedes-Benz as we introduce the next generation of connected services to customers," said Erik Goldman, president, HTI. "This platform upon which mbrace is built is designed with the most flexibility in the industry allowing Mercedes-Benz to continuously innovate with new services and features."

The mbrace system offers 18 features (five of which are part of a premium package) aggregated in the categories of safety & security, navigation & destination planning and convenience. The services can be accessed quickly and easily from within the vehicle or from any computer through a personalized web portal.

The standard mbrace safety and security features include: Automatic Collision Notification; SOS/Emergency Calling; Safe Ride; Roadside Assistance Connection (in-vehicle and mobile application); Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance; Automatic Alarm Notification; Vehicle Information and Crisis Assist. Navigation services include a Search & Send feature. Standard convenience features include: Remote Door Unlock and Lock (remote application), Vehicle Finder (via mobile application), and Dealer Connect (mobile application). A premium service -- mbrace PLUS -- adds such features as Location-Based Weather, Location-Based Traffic, agent-assisted Route Assistance, Point-of-Interest Destination Download (through agent), and "Mercedes-Benz Concierge," which functions much as a hotel concierge making restaurant reservations, locating stores and services, cash wire assistance, etc.

Hughes Telematics takes us for a ride with Mercedes' latest mbrace tech, demonstrates

6ef8819510e41fb74b34bf610f86f041.webp

You may not have heard of Hughes Telematics before, but this offshoot of the great Hughes empire provides the tech that, amongst other things, powers Mercedes' latest mbrace technology, Benz's response to OnStar. But that's not all they do; the company is working on its own advanced infotainment system for the car, and also showed off a system informally called "OnStar in a box" – an easy-to-install device that will let you track exactly where your car is at any time, how fast it was going, and even what kind of mileage it was geting at the time. Somewhat more troubling, it also could allow others access to the same information, people like your insurance company. Good stuff, or Big Brother with an OBDII connection? Read on to find out.

While Mercedes Benz offers different in-car assistance programs in Europe, in America it partnered with Hughes Telematics to develop mbrace, which we took at look at not too long ago. At CES Hughes was showing off what looks like could become the next-generation of mbrace, a touchscreen and voice interface currently called Next Gen Telematics. Right now the tech is still in its infancy, with a very simple interface and a USB Griffin PowerMate as a controller. But, the potential is there, showing off the ability to pull in media from external sources, read RSS feeds, and stream Slacker internet radio, much like Visteon's next-gen offerings.

Also on display was the company's AT-300 and AT-500 devices, the ones that let you add an OnStar- or mbrace-like experience to any car with an OBDII port (just about anything produced after 1996). Both simply connect to OBDII, getting their power from there, then can be mounted on the dash. The AT-500 has two buttons, one for calling for assistance and one for calling for emergencies, both of which can be programmed to call whatever numbers you like. When pressed, it acts like a speakerphone, and while it can't tell when an airbag was deployed, it does have the ability to guess in many cases when an accident has occurred based on rapid deceleration, meaning you're still likely to get automatic help.

More interesting, though, is what both devices do when just sitting there innocuously. They track the vehicle via GPS, uploading that information via cellular antenna. That data is stored on Hughes' systems and can be accessed through a web interface showing exactly how much ground the car covered, where it went, how long it took to get there and, of course, how fast it was going along the way. That the device is generally intended to be sold in large quantities to insurance companies, who might then turn around and offer them for free or cheap to customers, inspires thoughts of a distinctly Orwellian future.

But, don't get too paranoid yet. Even if insurance companies do start handing these out to customers, it would surely be an opt-in sort of program (at least at first), with discounts offered to those who choose to participate. This could be particularly appealing to those with car insurance premiums that went through the roof as their kids got behind the wheel, both thanks to what would surely be some sort of a discount incentive, and also thanks to the ability for those parents to track their kids' driving habits.

What about the rest of us? Well, the device has a little less appeal if you're the sort who tends to explore the other end of the speed limit when you're driving, but it does have its place on the road. Again, these devices are intended for sale to driving clubs (like AAA) and insurers, who will probably pay around $150 for the things then provide them to members and, while it's easy to get red in the face thinking about some operator in a call center making decisions about how good a driver you are based on how fast a blip is moving across their monitor, it's hard to envision a future in which we won't all be under the watchful eye of some omniscient authority or another. Thank goodness it's opt-in for now.

MB launches mbrace 2.0:

Leave the Car, Take the Concierge with You: Mercedes-Benz Launches New Version of mbrace Mobile Application

Mercedes Continues to Innovate with New Convenience and Location-Based Services

MONTVALE, N.J., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- As consumers increasingly turn to mobile devices to manage their lives from wherever they are, Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) has introduced an upgraded version of its mbrace telematics platform that connects the in-car navigation system in its vehicles with drivers' iPhones. Developed by its partner Hughes Telematics, Inc. (HTI), the new mbrace Mobile Application version 2.0 allows Mercedes-Benz customers to take their mbrace services with them when they leave their vehicles. Mercedes-Benz is the first manufacturer to extend connected services in this way.

The mbrace Mobile Application version 2.0 builds on the automotive industry's first fully integrated smartphone application which was launched by Mercedes-Benz and HTI in November 2009. That application allows customers to use their phones to unlock their vehicles, locate their vehicles in crowded parking lots, and find nearby or preferred dealers among other services. Version 2.0 includes all of those features and also allows customers to seamlessly access Mercedes-Benz Concierge services while away from the vehicle. The concierge can access the caller's location information to deliver relevant entertainment recommendations, restaurant locations, directions, traffic updates and more. Requested destination information can then be sent directly from the concierge to an in-vehicle navigation system.

The new application also allows users to save multiple accounts in the log-in screen and assign nicknames, making it simple and quick to access multiple mbrace accounts from one device.

"Version 2.0 of the mbrace Mobile Application takes the convenience and connectivity of mbrace further than ever before, allowing customers to access connected services anywhere, anytime," said Sascha Simon, who heads up advanced product planning for MBUSA. "Imagine you're away from your car talking on your iPhone to Mercedes-Benz Concierge. The agent can provide you with a great restaurant suggestion and simultaneously send the destination both to your iPhone and into your car.

That's what makes the system so great: the flexible architecture allows us to continually add new features as mobile technology evolves, keeping us on the cutting edge of innovation and connected services for our customers. This latest mobile application is a perfect example of that, and we will continue to add more features and connectivity on an ongoing basis."

In addition to the new mobile concierge service, Roadside Assistance on the iPhone also has been enhanced with the mbrace Mobile Application version 2.0 so that when a call is initiated, the customer's location information is transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance Center, allowing for more efficient and accurate service in the time of need. In instances when the vehicle may not be accessible, may not have power, or is in an unknown location, the mobile application allows Mercedes-Benz to help their customers by pinpointing exactly where to send assistance.

As the first automaker to offer a mobile application truly integrated with the vehicle, MBUSA continues to be an industry leader in bringing new connected technology to market. For customers on-the-go, the mbrace Mobile Application provides simple and seamless connectivity to the ever-expanding set of Mercedes-Benz mbrace services.

"Mercedes-Benz mbrace was designed as a platform for continuous innovation," said Erik Goldman, president, HTI. "The release of mbrace Mobile Application version 2.0 extends new services beyond the vehicle, giving Mercedes-Benz customers the freedom to seamlessly enjoy personalized service even when they're not in the driver's seat. We look forward to working with Mercedes to continue expansion of the mbrace Mobile Application service and feature set, enabling enhanced connectivity and interaction between the mobile device and vehicle."

Mercedes-Benz mbrace for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

Man, that's nothing Tarek (and Marcus). Aftermarket alarms have been doing this for years now. Where you guys been?? :D

What MB needs to do is make it damn easy to unlock the car with the emergency key. The other day the ML's battery dies and I couldn't open the door with the blade key. You turn it counterclockwise, nothing happens. Turn it clockwise, no turning whatsoever. I can't look up the manual, it's in the car. I call MB of Manhattan, they give me roadside assistance's number. I call them, they show up two hours later. Tech shows up in an R350, takes the key from me and unlocks the door, and my jaw drops. I tell him I've been trying all day to open it, he refuses to show me how he did it and proceeds to jump start it. I try it again after they left, nothing.

Later at night, I look it up, it's as follows:

- Insert mechanical key into the driver’s door lock.
- Turn mechanical key counterclock-wise and hold it there.
- Pull the door handle until the locking knob moves up.
- Pull the door handle once more to open the driver’s door.

And believe me, I tried it a couple of times for it to work.
Why can't it just be, insert key, turn key, pull door handle??? I also tried the X5's emergency key, and it worked with no drama.

I advise everyone to try it out to avoid the panic mode I was in thinking the metal key wasn't the ML's.

Good part is that jump starting your MB is free :D.

coming back to Europe starting in June 2012. :D

Mercedes-Benz Talks In-Car Connectivity with mbrace2 National Campaign

mbrace Now Standard Across 2013 Vehicle Line-Up
First System to Offer Cloud-Based Technology for Over-the-Air Updates

MONTVALE, N.J., Aug. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz is connecting with drivers through new advertising creative to further demonstrate how mbrace2™- the latest telematics innovation from Mercedes-Benz - keeps drivers fully engaged in their life from their vehicles in the safest way possible. The thirty-second spot entitled "All From One Place" debuts today during the 2012 US Open, of which Mercedes-Benz is a presenting sponsor. Additional campaign elements include extensive digital and social media executions.

mbrace2 provides drivers top-of-the-line features related to safety, infotainment, personal assistance and vehicle care. mbrace2 creates a truly networked vehicle offering open Internet access and custom versions of popular apps, including Facebook, Yelp and Google Local Search designed specifically for in-vehicle use - called Mercedes-Benz Apps. It also includes a solution to remotely update software via cloud networks ensuring that mbrace2 users always have the latest app versions in their vehicles and at their fingertips. Sensible user design and limited functionality of these Internet-based apps ensures that they provide maximum utility without unnecessary distraction when the vehicle is in motion; certain features are not available for use when the vehicle is in motion.

"Now with mbrace standard across our entire lineup, all of our customers can stay connected to the information and people that matter to them," stated Bernie Glaser, VP of marketing, Mercedes-Benz USA. "With the latest generation, drivers can experience premium digital services in and out of their vehicles with the most comprehensive capabilities available in the market today. And best of all, because it uses cloud technology, they will benefit from having a system that will only get better over time."

"All From One Place" is a big and colorful spot featuring a young man who is followed through various scenarios, including at a stadium location surrounded by a cheering crowd for a sports match, on a busy trading floor obtaining stock updates, mingling at a casual party, on a dinner date and finally walking through a storm – all to illustrate how one can shift and toggle through life's events with the help of mbrace2's seamless connectivity and customized apps.

After its debut on CBS during The US Open, the ad will continue in rotation through early November, with high-visibility placements during the 2012 Emmy Awards on ABC, NFL games on CBS and throughout network series season premiers such as "The Office," "Revenge" and "Smash." The spot will also be featured across programming on top-rated cable channels such as Bravo, E!, ESPN, Discovery, The Food Network, National Geographic, TNT and USA.

Much of the complimentary digital campaign is designed for tablet users and will be featured in a range of outlets covering the auto, tech, business and general news categories, including Autoweek, Engadget, Bloomberg, CNNMoney, Forbes, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Custom sponsorships will also be featured on the landing pages of both Slate and Wired. Additionally, users searching for information about or related to mbrace2 via Google/Yahoo!/Bing or social channels such as YouTube or Facebook will be connected to mbrace2 content as well.

For example, users searching "mbrace2" on Google will be served a text ad, which upon clicking they will be directed to mbrace2 content on MBUSA.com. Whereas on social networking sites (e.g., Facebook), users who have self-identified interest in categories (e.g., auto enthusiast fan) will be served a sponsored mbrace2 post.

The mbrace2 message will also be featured on the MBUSA Facebook page with a dedicated mbrace2 tab coupled with a takeover of the MBUSA YouTube Channel.

Introduced at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, mbrace2 builds upon the current generation's reputation as the "gold standard" for safety and concierge services, offering more than 60 features aggregated in the categories of safety & security, navigation & destination planning and convenience. The services can be accessed quickly and easily from within the vehicle, smartphone (iPhone or Android) through its Mobile Application or from any computer through a personalized web portal. mbrace2 made its vehicle debut this past spring in the MY13 SL-Class.

New remote access capabilities include Travel Zones/geo-fences, Curfew Minder, Driving Journal, Speed Alerts, Valet Protect and Remote Horns & Lights – all of which give owners unprecedented tools for greater peace of mind when secondary drivers use their Mercedes.

Since 1999, Mercedes-Benz has offered leading telematics features in the U.S. market, originally called Tele Aid. Ten years later, MBUSA launched mbrace, a new open-architecture offering that brought an unprecedented level of connectivity for drivers and began the process of allowing them to customize their in-vehicle experiences. The launch of mbrace also marked the first time an OEM connected drivers with their vehicles via their smartphone.

Mercedes-Benz USA Launches mbrace Connect For All MY2016 Vehicles
Additional updates bring remote start, remote diagnostics, iHeartRadio App

ATLANTA, Aug. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today announced the launch of mbrace Connect for all model year 2016 Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Starting today, the bundle of connected services will be standard on all MY2016 Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and SUVs for five years. Three optional packages – mbrace Secure, mbrace Concierge and mbrace Entertain – will round out the new suite of connected car services for Mercedes-Benz customers.

With mbrace Connect, owners can take advantage of the mbrace Mobile App, mbrace Web Services, in-vehicle Roadside Assistance services, non-streaming Mercedes-Benz Apps and remote updates. A new Remote Diagnostic Test enables dealer technicians to run over-the-air diagnostic reports without requiring customers to take their car to the dealership. And owners of battery electric and plug-in hybrid models will have access to the Vehicle Homepage, which allows drivers to check vehicle charge levels and map out charging stations along a route, among other functions designed to add convenience and reduce uncertainty.

"Since 1999, Mercedes-Benz has been an innovator in the telematics arena, culminating in this latest suite of mbrace services," said Bart Herring, general manager of product management for MBUSA. "With mbrace Connect, we're resetting the value equation for our customers, offering some of our best and newest mbrace features at no extra cost well into the life of their new car."

A notable addition to the mbrace Mobile App is the Remote Start function, allowing owners of compatible MY2016 models (namely, C-Class, S-Class, GLC and GLE) to start their vehicle's engine remotely via their smartphone. Remote Start works with no distance restriction between car and driver and will run the engine for 10 minutes up to two consecutive times, giving drivers the ability to pre-condition their vehicle based on their last climate control settings.

The mbrace Secure package brings a range of safety and security services like emergency crash notification, stolen vehicle location and automatic alarm notification, offered at no cost for a six-month trial period. Following the trial, owners may choose to purchase mbrace Secure for $199/year.

The two additional service packages, mbrace Concierge and mbrace Entertain, are included with a standard three-month trial. mbrace Concierge offers drivers their own "personal assistant" with 24/7 non-emergency agent support like turn-by-turn route assistance and location-based traffic and weather updates. mbrace Entertain gives customers access to streaming apps, including the new-for-MY2016 iHeartRadio App coming this fall, as well as an in-vehicle WiFi hotspot. Owners can continue these services after the trial for $20/month and $18/month, respectively, or together at a discounted rate of $28/month.

MY2016 Mercedes-Benz vehicles delivered prior to the August 10 launch date will also be upgraded to mbrace Connect. For more information about Mercedes-Benz mbrace, customers may visit an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer or call 1-800-FOR-MERCEDES.

Mercedes-Benz makes customers’ lives easier with Google Home and Amazon Alexa

Today, customers will be able to use both Google Assistant on Google Home and Amazon Alexa with all 2016 and 2017 Mercedes-Benz models in the United States.

Customers are increasingly benefiting from seamless and intelligent interactions between Internet of Things (IoT) devices connected through their Mercedes-Benz cars. Voice-activated personal assistants are one such means of interaction, supported by robust artificial intelligence (AI). By connecting these powerful services to Mercedes-Benz’s vehicles, customers gain personalized engagement and experiences.

With targeted commands to their personal assistant-enabled and voice-enabled devices, customers will be able to activate various functions for their vehicles. Natural language understanding allows the services to interpret these commands and turn them into actions.

For instance, customers with Google devices can simply say, “Ok, Google, tell Mercedes me to start my car,” and it will remotely start the customer’s car. Another available feature includes remote lock. With Alexa devices, customers can say, “Alexa, ask Mercedes me to send an address to the car” for remote navigation input and point-of-interest requests.

“We want to offer our customers a broad range of services 24/7, not just when they are in our cars,” says Nils Schanz, Head of IoT and Wearable Integration at MBRDNA. “Mercedes-Benz’s goal is creating an intelligent ecosystem around cars, and developing cutting-edge technology to make everyday life more convenient for our customers.”

Besides the devices, Mercedes-Benz customers will need an active Mercedes me account and an active mbrace© subscription. In order to link their accounts, customers will have to download the Google Home or Amazon Alexa app and connect it with Mercedes me. The service is now available in the United States. Europe will follow later this year.

In December 2016, Mercedes-Benz announced integration with Google Assistant on Google Home. Today, Mercedes-Benz is one of the first carmakers to integrate Google Home with their vehicles. This integration signals a significant step forward in the company's connectivity strategy.
