CLS-Class (C218) Mercedes-Benz CLS (C218) Picture Thread

The C218 Mercedes-Benz CLS is the second generation of the Mercedes CLS-Class range of four-door coupé sedans. It is succeeded by the CLS (C257). Body styles: C218 (4-door coupé), X218 (5-door shooting brake). Production: January 2011 – December 2017
Credit to a Member on MBWorld who just posted this after his encounter with the CLS.

A couple notes he said:

Negatives: TERRIBLY cheap HVAC, very under what you'd expect. More interior noise than the E-Class (unfortunate to hear, as I'd expect it to at least match the E, but maybe the frameless doors and more Sport enhancing elements make it louder?), and the aluminum doors don't have that "Tank like thud" that the E-Classes does.

Positives: Everything else. :D

I gotta say it looks great here! These cars look so dynamic and striking together, it's great.

The door frames make a world of difference when it comes to the door thud. The CLS door itself was very solid, in my sitting at the Detroit Auto Show, in par with the sedan and even with the more expensive S. I have no impressions while the car is moving, but I definitely concur with the door closure sensation.

K-A mate their is something in me that tells me in the futre you will be trading the E for a CLS.....

So when do you plan a visit to the dealership,Here in SA we still await the CLS its taking for ever to bring them here..

I called every Dealer around me and it looks like they're not coming in for another 1-2 weeks. I don't know how I saw one on the streets last Friday.

.... To look at, not to buy. :D

We'll see though. I've spent a lot of money on cars lately so a CLS is really out of my budget at the moment. I'm gonna wait and see how I like them on the roads, etc. and if I like it more than the E. I really hope that I don't!

Lol, we'll see. S-Class pricing is waaay more than I can fathom to spend. I'm hoping that neither the CLS or S-Class will lure me away from my E anytime soon, lol.

Totally sick. I have a feeling I'm gonna be in love with this car, even though I still probably won't agree with the upper swag line! At least it's unique (for a reason, as it's not very sensical to a degree).

I can't wait to see it in person. Here are some pics, courtesy of a Member on a Benz Forum, and it looks GORGEOUS!! As does the E right next to/behind it (phew!)! :D

I'm just hoping the w222 will be even better looking.. I would hate to like the CLS more than the S.

I went to a dealer introduction party last night, I have to say the CLS just doesn't do anything for me in 550 trim. The AMG version which I saw at the NYC auto show looks better. There is something missing with the base car, wheels are too small or the AMG kit is just exaggerated or something. The interior is really nice, but again I wasn't moved. The old car had a more cohesive interior design to me.

It was more unique too, more differentiated from the E-Class that it was based on. The exterior of the new CLS has just one "character line" too many. The old model was classic, clean Mercedes-Benz design. It pains me to say this, but I just don't care much for the CLS550. The CLS63 AMG adds some aggression to the design that is sorely needed. The CLS550 is just overstyled IMO. Too much flaring at the bottom of the front bumpers with not enough wheel behind it.

I was much more impressed with the SLK, which was also part of the introduction party. I will post pics sometime this weekend.

Maybe the CLS550 will grow on me, as the W212 E has done, but neither are classic, clean Mercedes-Benz design.

Saw the CLS today. Very nice, but I gotta say, I think the E is more my style. At least, at the moment, after sitting in it, being around it, etc. I don't see it justifying the price difference that much. But, as we all know, you only truly know how good a car looks when you see it on the road, in different elements, enough times, around other cars/architecture, etc.

The interior is very nice (actually nicer than the new $20K more expensive 6-Series, in look AND material touch/workmanship), very soft touch, yet the straight-from-C Class A/C unit is horridly cheap, it makes the W212 A/C unit appear as if it's from a $200K car. Other than that, very nice, very soft, dash is padded, even the plastics are padded. Not gonna be as durable and long lasting as the E's, I assume, but very nice and quality. The cupholders being constantly exposed is gross looking, and regressive from the E-Class.

However, like before, I actually enjoy and prefer the E's interior ambiance. The CLS is a bit claustrophobic, sightlines are small, and there's a lot of "materials" (plastics, etc.) around you, that kind of cave you in. Little things like carpeting inside the lower door consoles are nice (a'la W211).

The A-Pillars are thinner, and I wouldn't be surprised if, with that dramatic bend as well, they aren't as strong as the E's.

The doors surprisingly are heavy, and they do close with a nice M-B "clank" (like the E).

The Command is the exact same as on my car, nice, intuitive, does the job, and I'm no car-tech-freak, but if I traded in my E for one, I'd expect maybe some different Command graphics. The I/C display on the other hand is a huge improvement.

The exterior is nice, very elegant, and the front end is a mixture of absolute gorgeousness, and EU pedestrian regulation overly-blunt clumsiness. It's nice all in all though, but it isn't as pleasing as the W212, especially when analyzing from up close (W212 has a dynamic raked face, whilst the CLS's is very flat). I don't like the upper character line, still, and IMO it isn't a cohesive or great look, also is a bit messy and makes the car look rather ungainly from the rear, but it's individual I guess, and looks better in person than in pics. And the stock wheels are TERRIBLE, way worse than any W212 Sport wheels.

All in all, I like the E more, but I like stately Sedans with dynamic proportions. I think the E looks both more conservative, and more muscular, stately, imposing and dynamic, while the CLS looks more beautiful, svelt, elegant, pretty.

Oh, and here's the good news: Even if I wanted one, it couldn't work. At 6'5, headroom was adequate when I stick my head in the Sunroof opening, but if I even touch the actual roof, I have to kink my neck, no way my head fits in there. I'd assume it would even be a safety concern. In my E, I have the wider Pano opening to have my tall head comfortably in, and even if I put my head under the steel surround portion, I have almost-decent room, which is better than the CLS's non-livable.

So I'm good with the E for now, but I must say I love the new CLS!

P.S: There's no Lease/Incentive support for the CLS yet, but this Dealer said the several they have sold, have all been about $5K down and $12-$1700 a month Leases. WAY not worth that coin to me, but hey, some people gotta have the new kid on the block!

VERDICT: I went in there with an "I might really want this car" state of mind, and left without an "I want it" factor at all, and assured in my E. Yet, I still really liked and was pleased by it. I'll see how I feel when I see it on the road!

Oh, on another note, saw the new SLK as well, interior was nice (save for the awkwardly off-center screen), but the exterior, although nice and elegant, was a little blah. Still the nicest SLK yet, and a solid and easy on the eyes offering.

With the new ML looking like the FIRST NICE LOOKING ML yet, I gotta say, well done M-B!

Haha, great that you finally got to see it! In silver i presume? ;)

And I can really understand you still prefer your E. I too love every aspect of the E-Class, and always have since it came out (something you didn't K-A? Given what I've read on this forum haha). But I gotta say, I would personally take the CLS over it. I loved the first-gen too, so maybe it's just natural lol, I don't know. I just feel like it's kind of the "best of the best". It's lines and everything is perfect, well to me, and I think the interior is sublime.

Like I said, I do understand why you love your E, though. Your car really stands out, and no wonder why you still want it. Hopefully, you'll buy the CLS in the future, cause I would really like to see one with the same mods and color! :t-cheers:

Thanks again my friend. I DO really love it, no doubt. I think the E is more my style, but it was the same way with the W211. Then again, sometimes I see the CLS's and think that they're absolute perfection.... Sedan stateliness mixed with Coupe sportiness.

My opinion about this car will refine once I see them on the road, next to E-Classes, 5-Series', etc. etc. So far, I do know that the current prices aren't good enough to make me jump toward one (it's way out of my budget anyway!). Big issue is the headroom, very uncomfortable and impossible for my head to be fit right, unless I use the moonroof indentation, and even then, it's not totally perfect.

But yeah, I'd make it a "twin" of mine, and IMO it would look so hot! Especially considering I'd have to go Diamond White, which is much harder to maintain, but absolutely gorgeous.

K/A Please don't start this nonsense again...lol. All Mercedes' are design to the same safety standards. Do you really think they would make the CLS' roof weaker than the E's? If anything Mercedes (as they do with the CL) concentrates heavily on making their cars with thinner roof pillars just as strong as the ones with thicker pillars.

Haha, I think you're reading into it too much. :D

I'm not implying that it's weak or anything. I have heard through sources that it's very hard to bend very high strength steels in super swooped back ways (i.e new CLS), but one was from a GM engineer. ;) I would imagine the E's may be a bit stronger, however, due to those reasons perhaps. If that's true, it wouldn't be to an extend to where I'd feel of "inferior safety" in the CLS. Who knows anyway, as far as I'm concerned, all new M-B's are built to the highest safety code, give or take 1 or 2 ounces of extra steel mass here or there.

Also, the original CLS, I believe used regular strength steels in that very area (due to what I assume is because they needed such a raked sweep), while the W211 used H.S.S. I got this off a chart of steels used on previous M-B's, so not sure how true that is.

Edit: Also, believe me, I'm aware that thinner pillars are musts, and that they will use the highest strength steels to compensate for the less mass. Pillars are getting too thick anyway, and that's becoming a safety issue in itself (sightliness).

Saw one on the road the other day. Holy hell did it look good. It pretty much obliterated everything else on the road in looks.
