^are really ppl in brunei that poor?

Well I don't know for a fact, but I'm pretty sure that's the case, like in Dubai where we only hear about the rich people on here, but there are some very poor people made to work day and night!

I meant Great Britain wasnt happy for loosing the oil reserves.Or at that time it wasnt known that Brunei had oil?Anyway,i remember Charles reactions at the ceremony when Britain gave the sovereignty of Sinangapore to the local goverment. He looked really depressed!

Yeah, the chances of Brunei having undiscovered oil at that time is possible.

Really, you saw a photo of him? I didn't get to see such a photo - just some cartoon drawn in my history books. :D

I see he's got a an ML63 AMG!

I've got to say this guy has gone way over the top on cars, while there are people in his country starving to death, he's buying any car he can get his hands on. I really don't see the point of him having the same car, but in loads of different colours!

Actually, the Brunei government actually provides their citizens the basic needs that they require, and they are pretty generous with grants, incentives and what not. It's not as bad as you think - although the wealth is concentrated into a small group of privileged people, they do distribute some of it -adequately, I might add - to the rest of the country. The people (well some of them, anyway) are living on welfare if they can't find work.

Not really. It's in the middle of being a MEDC and a non MEDC country. Thr are ranked 26th when it comes to GDP. Like I mentioned earlier in the thread health care and education is free. Off course the money cashed in from oil could be distributed better but it ain't a third world country.

Oops my mistake,i meant Hong Kong.Singapore was under British control too?I didnt know that! Please post the cartoon!

Yes. Singapore was one of Britain's many island colonies, only thing is that we got our independence much earlier, at 1965 I think.

I'll post the cartoon once I find where my history book is... :D

Hello!! I have a lot of questions about the Hassan Al-Bolkiah´s collection of cars:
-Does he have a Porsche Carrera GT? How many? What are the colours?
-How many Rolls-Royce Phantom does he have? What are the colours?
-Does he have a Lamborghini Murcielago or Gallardo? What are the colours?
-How many Ferrari Enzo, F40 and F50 does he have? What are the colours?
-Does he have a Maybach 57/62? How many? WHat are the colours?
-Does he have a Bugatti Veyron? What are the colour?
-Does he have a Mercedes SLR? How many? What colours?
-Does he have the new CLK-GTR? What colours?
I will collect the collection of cars of the Sultan of Brunei in scale 1:18 and I need to know the models and the colours
Regards and thanks!!

You see espejor, the Sultan's car collection is an enigma. Exactly what he has and how many is not really known for sure -- it is one of the universe's great and wonderful mysteries.

almost all of brunei's citizens use Merc or BMW nowdays.
low price fuel and no tax!aww that must be nice.

hmm didnt someone say that he stopped collecting cars..
where the hell did he get the CLKDTM and SLR from??:D

I just think that's wrong, spending so much money on cars when people in his country are dying because of lack of food! He has many examples of the same car, and doesn't need them, I just don't understand why he would do that. He has more money than sence!

"This tiny oil-rich Islamic sultanate on the northwest coast of Borneo is known chiefly for the astounding wealth of its sultan, its tax-free, subsidised society, and the fact that (statistically at least) its population enjoy one of the highest per capita incomes on earth." Lonely Planet Guide.

"Brunei has a small well-to-do economy that encompasses a mixture of foreign and domestic entrepreneurship, government regulation, welfare measures, and village tradition. Crude oil and natural gas production account for just over half of GDP and more than 90% of exports. Per capita GDP is among the highest in Asia, and substantial income from overseas investment supplements income from domestic production. The government provides for all medical services and free education through the university level and subsidizes rice and housing." CIA World Fact Book

There may well be more he could do for his country, but it sounds like he's not hogging ALL the dough.

LOL, yes Jade ....and it's not only cars he and his family like to spend their wealth on. His youngest son (Prince Azim) likes to buy expensive gifts for people ....like the $5.7 worth of diamonds he gave to Mariah Carey because he has a crush on her.
