I am stunned! But not in a good way.
I wonder how far from its core values can BMW go? I know that some of you will crucify me for these words, but I just have to say it.
I'm slowly moving away from BMW. I don't like what I see.
To begin with, do you know why I like the LF-A so much? Because it has a fabulous engine. I mean FABULOUS. Lexus could very well do it the green way, and put the Prius drivetrain system in the LF-A body and sell it as the ultimate green sportscar. But they didn't. And do you know why? Because this is the essence of the automotive excellence. A N/A highrevving engine that sounds like paradise, offered alongside a fantastic chassis. Oh, and RWD (footie, don't you dare to say that AWD is superior).
But BMW did a 180 degrees turn and will offer us a green sportscar, with very thin wheels, a diesel motor with a few electic motors at each wheel. Which means the VED or whatever it will be called (*) with be an AWD car. Probably due to efficiency.
Then it's the hybrid system. If you want to offer a car of which the strong selling point is its driving pleasure (it's supposed to be a BMW) then why the hybrid system? Because it's the future? Because BMW is going green? Because of the environment? I don't know and I don't want to. I just want to see something that's true to the BMW's tradition.
I never imagined that someone at Munich would be so jealous of the Prius...
I'm getting sick of the idea of hybrid sportscars. If you want to sell hybrids, then sell it in a body that makes sense.
