It's 1pm in RSA so we will see it same time (Berlin time)...14:20pm ish....![]()
A little over a year after the presentation of theVision EfficientDynamics [ED] concept study at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show, and following a month-long tease of what turned out to be an early prototype mule with the body of a 6-Series of the plug-in hybrid on the 'Dontblogaboutthis' website (see pictures below), BMW today officially confirmed plans to build a production version of the eco-friendly sports car.
Probably not exactly what BMW enthusiasts were expecting from a BMW sportscar. Hybrids have the sex appeal equal to philately. I wonder if the production version will be equipped with the same 1.5-liter 3-cylinder diesel as the concept... It's hard not to feel a bit disappointed if you imagine the alternative could've been the Concept CS in production.
...equipped with the same 1.5-liter 3-cylinder diesel as the concept...
Yeah, it's economical and fast but does it really excite the enthusiast like Audi's R8 or MB's SLS? No.
I find the current BMW management's obsession to go to extreme lengths in being green hard to understand as BMW has never been about being the greenest or most environment-friendly carmaker. BMW used to be a "yuppie brand", now it's trying to be a "hippie brand".![]()
I applaud them for implementing the EfficientDynamics technology throughout the model range but this is simply going too far. It's obvious a 3-cylinder hybrid isn't going to be able to offer the same driving experience as a V8/V10 sportscar like R8 or SLS.
Well, remember the new Z8 is comming too, and it will come with the top M engine, which will end up in a 600 hp roadster. Not a supercar but...
There's not going to be a new Z8. It's replaced by the VED, count on it.
