January Update 2010 - BMW : The Road Ahead

From CSS :

"BMW's M Division are planning 3 models to challenge AMG on all fronts, We will see the M1 eco-friendly supercar, this model will feature a ultra-lightweight aluminum spaceframe and covered in carbon fiber with small amounts of aluminum for some of the bodu panels. The eco-friendly powertrain will see the use of a twin-turbo M5/M6 V-8 possibly enlarged for better power. The transmission of choice will be a new ZF 8 speed duel-clutch transmission driving all 4 wheels. The engine will be assisted by a small electric motor that will regenerate power. Beyond this model we will see what is currently known asd the Z9 which will be the successor to the Z8. The chassis will be a aluminum spaceframe, and powered by the twin-turbo 4.4liter M5/M6 V-8 and will be good for as much as 550 BHP The chassis will be state of the art to keep weight low as possible. Expect a hybrid version of this model also to compete with the Mercedes SLS AMG."

Car Spy Shots? Are they on crack???

Just....no.
The M1 will be an M version of the 1er. Not a CF/Alu supercar.

Well then it's the wrong name but if i remember right, according to scott an eco freindly sportcar is on the way, but it's only a sportcar with small 3cyl+electric engines, not V8.

The only M1 in development remains the E82 1er model in both standard and a ltd GTS variant. The clue is very much in the comments made by Dr Kay Segler when he talks about the M1 " It shows the direction of the future of the M brand"

The much discussed Eco-Super Sports Car will be seen much later in the decade as some of the developments showcased on the Vision Efficient Dynamics such as heat exchangers will not be available until 2015 at the most. This decade for BMW is all about Project-i and the significance of having it's range of Mega City Vehicles ready with the first "Car" for 2015. An Eco-Super Sports Car is the last stage of the strategy.

If you are talking about an Eco-Sports car in the current tense then it would be the Z2 Roadster and Coupe twins that are being developed to offer a standard engine , hybrid and full electric drivetrains.

A Roadster in the sense of the Z8 was mooted before the economic downturn. Although with the launch of the Z4 BMW has found the Z4 to be perfectly sustainable even during the economic crisis. With the corner about turned the Z4 is the perfectly sized Roadster which in the present term has seen customers downsize from either BMW and higher price competitors car in a high specification Z4. As of now there is no strategy to move higher than the Z4.

BMW's larger post-recession models are further gathering speed and again based upon an existing Backbone that spawns the 7er,5er,5er GT and the upcoming 6er for cost efficiency and offering an approach to the luxury segment with a different type of flagship namely the CS 6 and CS 7. This backbone sharing strategy allows BMW to begin to downsize technology deemed for high end luxury cars down to smaller models.

The new modular platform on the 1er , 3er and next MINI family will also be able to do this. As is the adaption of "FlexRay" Data transfer being integrated on a wider range of cars.

Jaunary

Scott > when will you give us more details of the forthcoming 1 series range ? touring ? shooting brake ?
and also X2 & X4 like the X6 in the low end segment to compete with the forthcoming Q1 :t-hands:

So, what is the DESIGN bodystyle/sheetmetal difference between the CS7 and CS6 ??

NOT talking about one being on the 6er platform and one on the 7er.

I mean bodystyling. What is their differences ??

I'm NOT convinced both will see production. I think only one will.

What about the video? When the matter is strictly on an important product launch in this case the 5er. BMW are not going to change the agenda to talk about other products.

So they confirm the M1, then comes the 5er launch where journalists rightfully ask about the M1, and the answer from BMW is the car suddenly hasn't gotten green light?

If you read the whole thing you can see they (BMW) are being entirely deceptive , look at Norbert Reithofer's comments.

"A 1er-M That could be a good idea!"

Yes, you're right about that. They are being deceptive and sort of playing with the interviewer. It wouldn't be the first time either, spreading doubt over announced things :D

So Scott, can you give us a name for the powerplant already? Will it be S55?
