Nissan's upmarket brand Infiniti has announced it will build a roadster version of the G37 coupe – aimed squarely at the BMW 3-series Coupe Convertible. And the Ferrari California isn't the only folding tin-top being announced this week; the G37 will also be launched as a CC with a multi-piece metal roof that stows at the flick of a switch.

Our artist's impression shows how the new open-top G will look with the roof stowed away. No official photos have been issued yet, but we do know that Infiniti's first roadster will be on sale in the US market in February 2009.

Infiniti G37 convertible: for Europe too?

The European business case is being analysed, but we'd say it'd be a shoe-in – especially in the roadster-mad UK market.

The news of the open-top G was buried in Nissan's financial results – and the launch of the new Nissan GT 2012 business plan.

I knew it would happen sooner or later. If you going to be the man you've got to beat the man, that man being BMW. Can't have a 3-Series fighter without a convertible.

Infiniti adds G37 convertible, updates coupe and sedan

Infiniti is adding a convertible to its G series lineup and will unveil it in November at the Los Angeles auto show.

For those who can't wait that long, Infiniti is doing a photo reveal on Aug. 16 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Here's what we know: It will be called the G37 convertible, it will have a retractable, three-piece hardtop and powertrain configurations will be in line with the rest of the G lineup.

Pebble Beach attendees also will get a look at the G37 sedan and coupe, which get moderate updates for the 2009 model year.

The sedan, formerly called the G35, gets a 3.7-liter, V6 powerplant rated at 328 hp. It can be paired with a new seven-speed automatic or a six-speed manual gearbox. Other updates include sport brakes, a new 18-inch wheel design and scratch-resistant paint.

The coupe gets an all-wheel-drive model, the G37x, and the new seven-speed automatic. It has the potent V6, and the coupe's powerplant is rated at 330 hp.

Expect pricing to be announced in the next month or so for the coupe and sedan; more details on the convertible will appear closer to the L.A. show.

Just a few more days and we'll see the G37 Convertible. Can't wait! 7-Speed automatics, great styling and plenty of power...there is a reason why Infiniti is favorite of the big 3 Japanese luxury brands.

Infiniti Releases First Official Photo of G37 Coupe-Convertible

Infiniti G37 ConvertibleThis is the first official photo of the new Infiniti G37 Convertible that will receive its global debut at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Based on the G37 Coupe, the G37 Convertible will feature a three-piece automatic retracting hardtop and will be offered with a 328 HP 3.7-liter V6 engine matted to either an all-new electronically controlled 7-speed automatic transmission with manual mode or a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The Japanese carmaker has confirmed sales only for the US market where it will be launched early in 2009. However, Infiniti says that the G37 Convertible is under study for a European launch where it would join its sister G models, the G37 Sedan and Coupe.

Now just need to see it with the top up.

Not nearly as bad as the Lexus IS convertible.

I don't want the designers to take this the wrong way but I see a piece of light blue putty that was stretched in the middle. The proportions seem sort of off. The front is rather brutal and bulgy(for lack of a better word) and so goes the rear as well. Hmmmm, not sure if I'm liking it right now. May work better on the eyes in a darker color.

Well for one the Volvo C70 was designed as a convertible from the start, that makes all the difference in the world. The C70 and some others look "right" because of this IMO. This way everything is designed around making the roof look and fit right, these two things being of equal priority.

The in between step is taking a coupe and making it into a convertible. BMW did this pretty good with the 3-Series Coupe. Now seeing them on the road you have to look twice to see if it is indeed the hardtop convertible and not the regular coupe. I suspect that cars like the 3-Series were design with a convertible version in mind, if not totally around it becoming a convertible. Ditto for the G37.

The worst way is the route that Lexus took, taking a sedan and turning it into a convertible. Just awful proportions and a truly hideous top-up look, but likely roomier than the other 2 types.
