If I may, I add something to this "old" thread. In my young age I learned three languages Polish, Russian, Latin and German, after migration to Canada when I was 31, I learned French, English and Spanish. It was hard but now i'm happy. I can be a GCF member.![]()

Latin - although it is a 'dead' language - is taught in secondary school in Belgium, as it is the predecessor of many roman languages (like French, Italian, Spanish, ...). A lot of words in medical science, biology, politics and other sciences are derived from Latin, so I think it is useful to have a basic knowledge of Latin (the same is true for ancient Greek). But we were only taught to read and write Latin, as speaking it is rather difficult and less useful of course. Moreover, you start reading documents from Cicero, Pliny the Younger (description of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which devastated Pompeii), ... very interesting if you are interested in languages, like me at that timeWhy latin ?
