CLS [Hot!] 2021 Mercedes Benz CLS facelift (mopf)

The Mercedes-Benz CLS (initially called the CLS-Class) is a series of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from December 2003 to August 2023. The original model was a four-door sedan based on the Mercedes E-Class platform, marketed as a four door coupé. An estate (shooting brake) model was later added to the model range with the second generation CLS.

Quite a good POV drive review of the CLS 53, which looks now to be discontinued.

Both were launched in 2018
In the UK there was exactly a year difference! Spring 2019 was GT 4 door deliveries/order books and Spring 2018 for the CLS.
giving it the same interior as everything else and just lighting up the air con vents was another faux pas....shame really. It was a unique model in the line up....

"In our opinion, our current product portfolio addresses emotionally appealing design more than ever," a company spokesperson told Car and Driver. "In this respect, models such as the EQE and EQS with their coupe-like lines offer attractive alternatives both in terms of design and price segment. Furthermore, the four-door AMG GT will continue to be part of the model range as a four-door coupe."

R.I.P. CLS
Of the three mentioned there as "attractive" none is more so than the CLS in my opinion.
It is true that having the CLS and the AMG GT together is far fetched, but I suppose they can always make the new AMG GT a little more stylish with some of the CLS trait.

Conceptually it's a sportier S-Class, it should still be as successful

A sad day for the car that broke ground as the original four door coupé and also broke the rules in doing so. A plethora of imitators was the result.
Instead of fostering that success by preserving the CLS’ status, Mercedes went and - in a moment of marketing department hubris - released an AMG-dedicated model that, a) no one asked for, and, b) served no greater purpose than to dilute the CLS’ well-established cachet.

Not to mention making the new generation look more CLA-esque rather than it's own beautiful thing. I'm not convinced the GT4 is even selling well enough to have justified this :(

Well the GT4 sells better than the CLS, at least in the USA. I would suspect it sells better around the world too.

This gen is the worst looking Cls ever.
I don’t feel the same way. On the road it’s got tremendous presence and, because it’s so rare, it’s quite an event. One of my favourite cars to see on the road because it is such a good looking vehicle. Superb proportions allied with sensible, elegant styling. Interior’s a peach too. A dreadfully under-appreciated car.

It's sad, but the CLS had no place in MB's dealership for a long time now.

The classic 3-box sedan is not the bread and butter of car brands lately, since the SUV took over. The CLS is a niche of a niche, stuck with the previous gen E-Class underpinnings and a daring exterior design, struggling to breath in a sea of soft eggs and blobs (ie. the rest of MB models).

I will certainly miss it, even though I haven't seen not even a single 3rd gen. one ever. The first generation was ahead of its time. It took me years to appreciate it, but now I think of it as one of the most beautiful sedans ever.

I think the 3rd Gen has been anonymous for the following reasons:

  • Same headlights as the A-Class and other Mercs.
  • Weak design that doesn't look significantly sexier than the well designed E-Class.
  • Launched in a period when the Merc lineup was saturated with salons e.g: CLA, A-class sedan, E-Class, AMG GT4D and S-Class.
  • No 63 AMG variant
  • Not very interesting compared with BEV coupes such as the Tycan and E-Tron GT.

You owe me a good breakfast.. damn that got me hungry…

I owned and drove a 2nd generation CLS 350 CDI from early 2012 until june 2014. Right between a W221 and W222. I particularly liked it’s design, the dashboard, the way one sat in it, being rather sporty and cosy at the same time and the way it drove, much more connected to the road than I was used to. One I let go with a tiny tear in my eyes.

But the X6 maintains its constant sales despite the invasion of SUV's coupes, the CLS niche morphed in some way and Mercedes finished it off with AMG GT4

I'm genuinely sad to know about the demise of the CLS. It's my favourite Mercedes after the S-class and no EQ whatever will ever be to fill its shoes, because all these EQ models are designed with efficiency in mind (and they look horrid because of that), while the CLS was designed to be stylish. The CLS was designed to be a cool Mercedes. For me the best looking CLS, was original one, especially in CLS 55 AMG form and in black. Absolute porn on wheels. The second gen was good looking as well, Ray Donovan' steel grey CLS 550 was a very stylish ride for a Hollywood fixer. I'm in the minority of those who appreciated the looks of the current CLS, but what pissed me off about it, was the lack of an AMG V8 version of it, because they (Mercedes) reckoned that creating a four door version of the AMG GT was a much better idea than launching a new CLS 63. To me, the AMG GT 4 is nowhere near as pretty as the CLS. It's a shame how Mercedes neglected the CLS in the last few years.

R.I.P CLS. You will be missed.

It's the same chassis as the outgoing E-Class, the W213. You make it sound like it's riding on the W212 E-Class.
