I think they messed up with the CLS with the rear which to me is just not attractive, aggressive, or sporty. Also on the inside the fact that it is not differentiated from the E makes one wonder why the price diff?
This gen CLS screams planned obsolescence... MB didn’t do anything to make it truly special imo. It’s a shame for the original to go out this way.

It was doomed the moment they decided on the 4door AMG GT.

but the 4door is the double the price of an CLS, so not everyone can afford it.
I still think that if you pick up the right SA’s and color combos, the CLS is gorgeous.
Not sure what market you're in, but the price isn't double here, they're about 20K apart in starting price. Ultimately it really doesn't matter, the AMG GT is selling the CLS isn't so being cheaper isn't doing anything for it. It's not worth the premium over the E-Class anymore. The AMG GT 4D has rendered the CLS irrelevant. Looks aside.

in the UK, the CLS starts at £40k....The GT63 £120k, never see either about!...we don't get the GT 53. Genuinely bemused......Had two of the previous C218, the CLS 63s was a beauty...waited, waited, found no CLS 63 replacement...Got a new E63s...loved inside, exterior was okay by the time I got rid of it......then...it became a real dilemma...CLS 53 would be a disappointment after having a 63. EQS, the interior is about the only passable part, S coupe, discontinued shortly/no mbux....GT63...it's essentially an E63 for 50% more....E63s facelift....nope...You’re right, its not double, but half of its price.
The CLS starts with 60.000 €, the 4door at 95.000 €. Thats quite a big difference, almost for an new C-Class.
The E-Class is 8.000 € cheaper, but i would pay those 8k more everytime, because the coupe line and shark nose (and now also the rear end, because the rear end of the facelifted E is ugly af) of the CLS are worth it over the W213.

..I've always loved pretty much every Mercedes through and through, some weren't the greatest but you still wanted one of each model....but recently, jesus, i've never had anything but Mercedes but even I am questioning their design direction - I'm in my 30's but I don't know what they are playing at... appeal to young people, yes, but on social media they get ripped more and more, admittedly half the people commenting aren't exactly mercedes buyers, but genuinely don't know what to get next...

you must know that Daimler is cutting costs and there will never be a self-standing CLS again. Thats why i still have one 1st generation parked in my garage next to other Mercs. Because its definitely a future classic.
I agree with you. The CLS product has been mismanaged and they have left a gaping whole in the line-up with the removal of the CLS63 and discontinuation of the S coupe. And this is from a company that has historically been a coupe maestro.
As with the UK, we don't get the GT53 in Australia. And the GT 4 doot isn't exactly pretty. It's brutal and atheletic yes, but it's not beautiful.
So why do you both think they are they doing it? I don't think we are the only people with this dilemma. We are the hardcore fans that know the brands and models in depth...may be we want too much (but you like a brand for it's core values which seem to have diverged from logical decisions and now seem to be more worried about LGBT flags (oh that was funny reading the comments on MB instagram last year).... or is it appealing/pandering to the Chinese market now instead of the West and our design tastes are different?
Have a couple of friends with car dealerships - both telling me to forget Mercedes, they are "run of the mill cars" - "get a Porsche". "get an Urus"....telling me how well they hold their price and stand out...Actually been tempted by some Audis (never thought I'd say that)
but I'm not so sure....Tesla, nasty although the technology is great as long as doesn't kill me! (Friend says he doesn't trust his near a metal barrier on a bend)
The S coupe has basically one competitor, continental GT....my neighbour purchased one and you can't even change the analogue clock unless you take it back to the dealer
Aston Martin - neighbours rusted after 6 months
Mclaren - 2 people with these repeatedly breaking down and rust an issue...
What to do next though is anyones guess..... Klier, are you going to stick with BMW?
I believe Ola plans to take Mercedes back upmarket. There's more money to be made there, instead of chasing volume.
If the A Class was built to S Class standards, would it be bad for S Class image?I think that is the plan, back upmarket, but they have to make sure the cars are proper in order to do that. If they truly make a change in how they build a car it will mean bigger price increases and less sales, but more profits. The way Mercedes used to be. The days of when a 190E felt, smelled and was built just like the 420SEL. You do that and the sales will take care of themselves. Less models, more beautiful styling, hit you in the face luxury and build quality, and easier to use, but advanced tech. Make the driving a surreal experience, like the S-Class, but get the C-Class to that level of refinement. Then for the sportier models, make them sportier, but not at the all expense of ride and civility.

I think not. It would be viewed as small Mercedes instead of cheapest Mercedes. Obviously sales would be very low, which is contrary to business practices of increasing sales. Porsche priced the Macan way higher than the Q5 making it a rather not good value car for those that want the highest badge for the lowest price.
