Help me choose a replacement for the E-class

Hello fellow German Car Lovers:

It is with sadness I report we're saying farewell to our E-class in the very near future. We had many happy trips and great drives, but as they say: all good things must come to an end.

And with this comes a dilema... what car to chose to replace?

It has to be a sedan, German and that it will not make me miss the E-class drive
Yes, i know that another E-class would do it, but it's best to consider all options.

We still have in the garage the MB C-Class and BMW 650i

Could you give suggestions? and why?

Thanks in advance

I guess your E-class is your "work horse" for long distance drives. So with that being said you need to replace the E-class with a car just as big or something even larger.
There is always the 5er and the A6. Then you can always check out a used A8 or perhaps buy an SUV like the ML. IMO they will likely offer the same comfort and space as the E-class.

Thanks Lu:

I'm saying a sedan because I ocasionally take colleges for lunch and such.

We are planning on adding an SUV/truck once we have more garages (1-2 years).

yes I do trek a distance ( 26 miles each way , er 41 km) and we have torrential rains/winds in Florida.

Still devastated by letting go of the E-class.. it's like I'm losing an old friend

If you really like the E why don't you hang on it................until the beginning of 2009 when the replacement will be unleashed. If you are already getting a SUV then I really don't know any other cars to recommend than the A6, 5er, A8 or S-class.

you know that segment is very tricky at this moment..
the new E is one year away ( personally i would wait)
the A6 needs a FL..and will get it soon..so its a MUST wait if your into the A6
and the 5er is also starting to become a older car..as its allready a good time into its FL..
so if you MUST buy i would say 5er..otherwise wait for the A6 FL..
but if you can wait for that..you can probably wait for the new E..

so what im trying to say is .. hahah.. wait for the new E:D..

PS
Ohh and you can always go non german..but that is frowned upon around here..haha...:D

Thanks Lu and Artist...I wish I could wait.

Hummm, you guys gave me a great idea.. maybe lease an older car for 2 years till the new ones come out? :t-hands:

Yikes, must make sure what fits in the garage too!:D :D

Non-german OOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Ok , we've had Jags and Japs before. Would prefrer to stick with German.

I like the A5, but it's a coupe, and tell me if I'm wrong but unless it's a Quattro the A6 is a front-end drive correct?

^yep all audis are Front wheel drive if not quattro..

get a C class..keep it for a while..and then get the new E:D..haha

How about a S-class? It does everything an E-class will and more. If this will be your daily car then, I guess the W211 E-class will be just right for you, don't worry about it being replaced by a newer model soon because the W211 is a great car and it will satisfy your daily needs. I have to say the rear shoulder room is a bit tight, so if you are carrying 3 passanger at the back, it will be a bit of a squeeze.

If you love the feel of your W210, then only a MB will do. I am sure you know.

I would also go for a S-Class (maybe a W220 - it was great build and has this great classic look) or an used E-Class W211 (maybe the facelifted model).
It's a very difficult situation. Nevertheless there are a lot of W210 on the used car market with low mileage and the prices are also okay.

I hope, that you will get some more suggestions here! :t-cheers: And that you find the right car...

I would recommend a A6 3.2 quattro. Since you experience torrential rain in your area, it may be good to have a car that sticks to the road. quattro will give you a new level of confidence taking those twisties...

One thing though, you'd better check out the ride of the A6 first, I'm not sure if it will be as cossetting as the E. On our A8 the suspension is okay, not perfect but we can live with it.

Thanks guys, this is really really tough! and I appreciate all your help.

I was driving around in the 6-er today although a great ride, an E-class went by me and well, it's in the garage and I miss it already.

I think a good round of tests drives are in my near future and will give me good perspective ..;)

I did think of getting an X5 or the Q7. Also need to test drive.

For what I understand, the X5 has the feel of a sedan more than a truck, and NSL does want a truck

An S class would be cool too! Now, how does the new MB C compare to my old MB E-class?

Yikes so many choices...!!!!

Hey Yaz: can I trust buying a used car from your friend? :t-hihi: :t-hihi:

as far as i understand you liked the comfort of the E..and the new C with its forcus on sports will NOT be as comfortable..
but if you go with the S.. well i dont think you can travel any better way on road..
S500 with AMG package.. Wohooooooo:D

The new C-Class, especially in Avantgarde trim is quite sporty - and yet still very comfortable. A wonderful blend between these two ideals. Classic and Elegance trim are softer and more comfort oriented, yet when I drove the Classic C200 Kompressor it still handled very confidently but nothing on the level of the sport model. :usa7uh:

I think your garage could use an SUV. Do you have kids? :D

How about a Mercedes M-Class? An ML350 or ML550 sounds alluring, doesn't it? If they ever bring over the ML320 CDI / Bluetec that would be the SUV to get.

Audi A8 just because you will never ever feel disapointed when you first enter the car. It's the Royal Audi.. and it just got a facelift (which I'm sure you allready know). It's simply perfect. Only drawback must be the size.. but Hey!.. Does size really matter ? :D

Or A6.. but "soon" is a Facelift so then you'll simply have to wait..

Audi A8 is just perfect...you don't have an Audi in your garage and the A8 is an absolutely beautiful car! I think Mirage can give you some very good tips and ideas about this car! :usa7uh:

And in my opinion an A8 isn't oversized...!!

Hi everybody!

I test drove a 750i demo with 20-inch rims.

The drive felt just like the W210, manuvering pretty similar too. The dealer was nice enough to let us drive it home and...then drawback: 8-ft wide garage...
I have less and 1 inch of room to spare on each side of the mirrors ( AAAAAAA!)

I know and SUV would be the smartest thing to do, it goes more by want than need.

We would like to ADD a SUV once we have more garages. I think NSL has his heart set on a G which is to tall to fit :t-banghea

Hey Ree: I don't find the A8 oversized either

DaSilva my dear, size in this case does matter ;)

I think the Audi dealer is my next stop :t-drive: I hope I don't get another salesperson/jerk showing me how nice the mirror on the sunvisor is so I can put on my makeup :icon_roll

Thanks again for all your suggestions, it just comes to show how knowlegeable you guys are :usa7uh:
