VW Golf VI Will Bring Cabrio Version Back To The Market
Launch by the end of 2008
It is needless to say the next generation of Volkswagen Golf, the sixth one, will drive lots of attention when it is officially unveiled, what is expected to happen by the end of 2008, possibly at the Paris Motor Show or, if later, at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. But the Golf VI, as it is also called, will also bring back one version that many European and North American customers must have missed, the cabrio. This is what MotorAuthority has both informed and presented, through computer renderings of the future Golf family.
Most hard top convertibles are, as the acronym CC states, coupes, and this is the reason Golf will get a soft retractable top, which should benefit from new technologies and present less noise and leaking problems, as well as easier ways to put the top on and off.
Designed by Walter de Silva, the Golf VI will have three and five door version, as well as the GTI, which may get a glass roof, as you can see in the renderings, and a 2.0 TFSI engine pumping out more than 260 bhp. A new TFSI engine, 1.6-litre, is also said to be on the plans, generating about 200 bhp. The engine for the base model will probably be the 1.4 TFSI, but Volkswagen may choose to have an even cheaper version, with no turbo, what is not very likely to happen, considering Lancia’s decision of offering only turbo engines for the Delta and the engine downsizing that is strongly taking place in the Old World.
Diesel engines are also expected to equip the hatchback, both in BlueMotion versions and, in the future, in a electric-hybrid model, expected to emerge in some years from now due to technical difficulties the development of these ultra low consumption vehicles are presenting.

While everyone is gearing up for the reveal of the all new sixth-generation Golf hatchback later this year, the new Golf Plus, which will share the same face as the Mark VI Golf, was spotted recently as it conducted several towing capacity tests. The new Golf Plus retains the body of the current model but its front end will be completely restyled to match the new Mark VI.
This means that it will feature the same generous proportions of the current model, with a 1,580mm roof and a slightly longer wheelbase than the Golf. New to the car will be the front bumpers and headlight treatment, as well as a new bonnet and slightly revised LED taillights.
Inside, there will be split-folding rear seats, a height-adjustable rear storage surface and more than 1,400L of storage space when the seats are folded down.
The engine line-up will be similar to the Mark VI Golf and will include two petrol and two TDI diesel engines. The base unit will be a 1.4L petrol four-cylinder with 75hp (55kW) and the range topper will be a 2.0L TFSI with 150hp (110kW). Transmissions will include a six-speed manual as standard and a new seven-speed DSG as an option. Expect to see the car debut several months after the launch of the new Mark VI at the Paris Motor Show this October.

The company recently released a 1.4L TSI ‘TwinCharger’ engine that features both a turbocharger and supercharger, but the new model may get a 1.2L or even a 1.0L mill developing 75hp. According to Wolfgang Steiger, VW’s manager for powertrain research, the company may even opt to build these engines with just three cylinders.
Buyers will have to wait until next year for them to be available, he told Automotive News.
Volkswagen will be one of the hardest hit when tough new fuel economy and C02 regulations are passed in the EU. The company has been working to reduce the pollution generated across its fleet by introducing special Bluemotion models, which use aerodynamic optimization, better electronic engine management, and low resistance tires to achieve lower mileage rates.
Hybrids are also on the cards for VW, though no solid plans have been made yet. The carmaker is rumored to be preparing a diesel-hybrid Golf that will achieve economy rates of 69MPG. Despite the push towards more fuel efficient cars in the U.S. it’s still unlikely we’ll see a three-cylinder Rabbit Stateside, as the 75hp engines are better suited purely towards city driving rather than long highway journeys.

According to our source Volkswagen seems to have some problems with the next generation VW Golf, the VW Golf VI, and therefore can't reach the self-set ROI rate of 5%, currently at 3.4%. This means that Volkswagen would lose over 600 million Euro profit over the product lifetime thanks also to the weak dollar.
As a result, Dr. Martin Winterkorn has decided NOT to sell the next-generation VW Golf in the US, Brazil and Australia!

You have to be kidding me, no new Golf in Australia ???? No Golf, that means no new Jetta, and how about the Eso? that wipes out half of VW Australia's model range. How can a company decides not to sell the most popular model in one market?
To me that looks rather like facelift of current car...
Yeah, because this new version is reskined version of the current generation, with some other mechanical improvements. It isn't a big problem I guess, cause the current Golf is a pretty good small car already. VW is trying to reduce as much cost as possible, and the introduction of the Golf VI was brought forward because the current Golf V is just too expensive to build. VW didn't even bother to facelift the current Golf V.

The Aussie dollar is very strong, so this should be working in its favour, not against it?
