I think so too. VW need to spice up their design. Yesterday I saw a black Honda Civic with black/chrome after market rims and it looked sick. But that doesn't beat the red Type R I saw today, it looked amazing. Everyone stared at it, it was a real head turner. VW need to go bold, their designs are becoming a big generic like Audis.

Volkswagen has pushed back the production start date for next-generation Golf, a new report finds. Internally called the MkVI, the Golf was expected to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March with sales following in the fall. However, design changes have pushed back the car's world debut until the Paris Motor Show in September 2008 with sales beginning in 2009 — a delay of about 6 months.
When Martin Winterkorn took over at VW, he demanded to review all new cars and wouldn't give them the green light until he did so. Apparently he didn't like the design on the new Golf, hence the delay.

I think it is a very good news.
Don't take me wrong, I just hate the Golf V, and its crappy noisy diesel motors, with its for a Golf bad finish, and bulky awful design, it is really the worse Golf ever.
But a Golf should not change every 4 years!!! I hope the FL will correct the rear, less bulbous and with less awful rear lights, and will also give the Golf a good finish, with darker plastics and a bit of design in the inside.
It could be great to see the motor of the Tiguan, with common rail, in the FL Golf.
But don't change it too soon, not good!!! It has no real rel competitor, the Focus has the most horrible finish I've ever seen in a moder mid-sized car, the Astra has the reliability of a old Triumph, the Auris has the worse design ever seen...The C4 is only a Citroën, the Megane is not very reliable, the 308...not the same image.
So, let's make the G V better with a FL, and not change it too soon. it is not a bad car, it only have lost what made the Golf a Golf, and has become a normal car, but with excellent fabrication and reliability.

Wasn't the plan to replace it ASAP? First Golf VI launch was pushed from planned launch in Spring 2008 to Fall 2008, and now it's pushed even further again - into Spring 2009. So, what's going on here?
Yes, Golf is still a benchmark, but many have come way too close (Auris, i30, Cee'd etc). New P308 is already here, facelifted Focus & Astra are coming, new Megane on the way.
I hope VW are just taking time to develop an even better Golf than initially planned - to benchmark all the rivals again.
I really want new VW's to stand out again - quality wise. Although I wish more trendy design will also come ... eg. Scirocco: I really hope they left the new new grille from the Concept intact - at least on Scirocco.

And it has lost all what made it a Golf.
But it does not need to be replaced too soon, it hate cars with short life, a Golf should not be replaced too early; and now the GV has established itself as the benchmark, even if it is not really a better cat than others, it has the reliability, good quality many others don't have.
Like I said, I had an Astra cdti 150 (excellent finition, good design), in 3 months I spend all my time at Opel to let it repair, it only had 15.000kms...The Focus is awfully made, the Auris is awfully designed, the Megane has the same reliability as the Opel...
The C4 is a good car, but Citroën, the 308, wait and see.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI is one of the most sought after models in the Golf lineup and has even proven to be the favored choice over the more powerful R32 in most markets. Its combination of a punchy drivetrain, slick gearbox and understated styling have won it many fans over the years and it’s a recipe VW won’t want to mess around with for the next-gen model due next year.
The new model will retain its FWD layout but drops the current 200hp (150kW) engine in favor of a more powerful 2.0L turbo four with an available 230hp (171kW). Once again, gearbox choices will include either manual or DSG transmissions with six gears.
According to the rendering, the new GTI will feature the same hexagonal mesh grille as the current model but the front bumper will sport a single intake spanning its entire length, similar to the design used for the Golf GTI W12-650 concept car.
Both three and five-door bodystyles will be available and, if given the green light, we could also see a convertible version for the first time. VW officials are considering developing a low-cost convertible version of the Golf but are fearful it may cannibalize sales of the current Eos and upcoming Scirocco convertibles. There’s even talk of an entry-level drop top based on the new up!

The sixth generation Golf will be all new and among us by the end of 2008. Today we came across the new Golf in a giant sandbox during testing runs.
The VW Golf VI has been designed by Volkswagen's head designer Walter de Silva and VW is looking to increase the build quality while powering the new Golf with more economical engines. This would include a BlueMotion version and possibly even a hybrid model sometime in 2009.
The range will again consist of a three- and five-door model with a stationwagon coming later in the life cycle followed eventually by a GTi and ragtop convertible. But what we want to know is whether a new R32 is in the pipeline and how powerful it will be.

VW Golf: Will be launched in late 2008
Here's another confirmation that the new VW Golf VI will be launched in late 2008, made by Ulrich Hackenberg in an interview with German Automobilwoche.
Whatever the reason is the new 6th-gen VW Golf is to be introduced in late 2008.
According to Hackenberg, the new model will be equipped with updated 160Hp 1.8TFSI Audi’s engine. The company is going to stop production of the 170Hp 1.4TSI engine as this type is not reliable.
