Politics German Politics

In Bavaria, it is a "saving grace" of sorts for the CSU that the Freie Wähler performed as well as they did. They, in my opinion, are the most "natural" coalition partner and I hope that the negotiations are successful. Neither The Greens nor the AfD can be an option. The Greens really shot themselves in the foot while being so close to being seriously considered by the CSU as a possible partner. Up until last Thursday, Marcus Söder was quite open regarding a CSU/Green coalition-although admitting that contrasts in sociopolitical perceptions would be difficult to overcome. But on Friday, The Greens' co-chairman and "posterboy" Robert Habeck opened his mouth and inserted his foot when insinuating that a coalition involving his party would "introduce democracy to Bavaria". A statement as utterly stupid as it was unfortunate and so thoroughly unbecoming for an experienced, elevated-level politician. I've never been able to warm to Habeck-but, until now, had never considered him being an imbecile. That has now changed. Over history, The Greens have produced a small number of highly competent politicans. But they are, in general, NOT prepared to conduct effective, comprehensive, cohesive Realpolitik. And in that sense, they are nothing other than delusional populists. Purveyors of sometimes valid messages-but unable to provide plausible solutions. Self-enamored and condescending. Quite similar to the AfD in those aspects, actually.

It's all data from the exit poll, yet summarized & reported by Die Tagesschau. It was reported also by other media. So, it's legit.

What highlights' the criticism regarding, for example, Die Tagesschau (Tagesthemen) or Heute (Heute Journal) is OMISSION + SELECTIVE AMNESIA rather than "FALSE news" per se.

The new (German) normal.

Cologne is actually pretty untypical for Germany. At least when subscribing to standard German stereotypes.

More chaotic than orderly. More dingy than tidy. More "tolerant" than "reprimanding". Far more eccentric than reserved. Far more "liberal" than "conservative" (whatever that actually may mean...). A vibrant, interesting place for students, artists, "alternatives", party people, hand-wringing, painfully politically correct moralists and dropouts. Most certainly NOT a suitable place of residence for the more "traditional" or "structured".

For me, it's no coincidence that much of what happens in Cologne...well...happens in Cologne.

The poster girl of the Green Party, Katharina Schulze, making an ass of herself. Can’t answer simple questions and resorts to ignoring them or attacking the person who asked the question.

This is synonymous for the entire Green Party. I despise them with all my heart and soul. INCOMPETENCE x infinity...

She was featured in a television interview that I saw some 3-4 weeks ago. An effervescent young woman. But I also gained the impression that she is one of the duller tools in the political shed. And certainly NOT an individual that I would like to see in a decision-making function of any sort.

As well as interpreting, explaining the news to us, the plebs, in a “poltical wanted” way. It’s not always sticking to the facts, but feels the need for “explanation”.

Indeed. "Lecturing with wagging index finger to dictate to the viewer what is politically correct ".

In Dr. Stephen Hawkings' last published series of essays, "Brief Answers To The Big Questions", he, among other things, lamented the demise of rationale and reason in favor of the dismissal of science. expertise and the rationale inherent in a healthy intellect. The evidence of which can be seen in, for example, the election of Donald Trump as POTUS...or...BREXIT...Brussels EU "Eurocrats"...or German politics, for that matter (among many other aspects). Are we in the clutches of a "revolution" that propagates the "self-proclaimed moralists"..."denialists"..."the selective amnesia inflicted"...?

Was it Albert Einstein that elaborated: "Only two things are infinite. The Universe. And the stupiditiy of mankind." ?

Gut erkannt, lieber Albert. Gut erkannt.

Looking forward to the election in Hessen in 10 days time:

Much indicates that the current CDU/Green coalition will remain-albeit with roles reversed (The Greens becoming the senior partner, the CDU the junior partner). That would mean a Green minister president (current minister of commerce, Tarek Al-Wazir) replacing the current CDU minister president Volker Bouffier.

Despite my dislike of the Greens in general, Al-Wazir is one of that partys' very few competent politicians. And I wouldn't mind seeing Bouffier, an embodiment of a "Merkel Lapdog", being devastatingly humiliated. I'd applaud that fate in the cases of Armin Laschet and Daniel Günther as well. They too are pathetically subservient.

Al-Wazir does make a competent impression. And seems to be a realist.

Unlike Roth, Hofreiter, Habeck, Schulze, Göring-Eckardt, Trittin, Peter, Künast... man, just listing their names gives me nightmares. :D

Rumours abound that Friedrich Merz is seriously considering a comeback into "active" CDU politics.

PLEASE let this be true. Replacing "Closet Green" Merkel and weeding the party of her subservient ankle-biting toy poodles would be...well...simply grand.

It would be the first step in restoring the CDU. Merkel’s politics of the last 5-6 years was in fact SPDB90GRÜNEN politics. Didn’t she once say, she felt more at ease with Politicians of B90/Die Grünen than with her own CDU politicians?
Edit: but don’t forget, Jimmy, that in the meanwhile, there are lots of “leftwing” politicians in the CDU (Laschet and Günther to new a few) Merz alone won’t be enough...

Perhaps the (until now) more hesitant party conservatives would be emboldend by Merz occupying a key position. If the election in Hessen goes really bad for the CDU, I suspect that the foodgates will be opened and Merkel overwhelmed by a tsunami of conservative resistance.

Merkel, Krampf-Karrenbauer, Laschet, Günther and Bouffier could always defect to The Greens. In spirit, they've already done so quite a while ago.

It’s embarrassing that people like Claudia Roth are allowed to become politicians and run... I mean ruin... a country.

When I read the comments on political news stories, a lot of commenters joke that politicians should be required to take an intelligence test before they go into politics.

I think this is a GREAT idea!

Robert Habeck was one of the featured guests on Thursday evenings' Maybrit Illner TV political talk show. His rhetorical skirmish with Alexander Dobrindt indicated to me that Habeck...a.) prematurely retorts to comments that he has totally misconstrued-"open mouth prior to engaging brain syndrome"...and...b.) lacks the aplomb necessary in order to occupy a key decision-making position in the government.

I simply cannot fathom my countrys' newly found fascination for The Greens (according to the polls). That a very large part of the electorate is frustrated to the point of disgust with the current coalition government is more than understandable. As a studied political scientist (and eternal student), I cannot recall a more dismal state of affairs...and I've been an observer since the Willy Brandt administration of 1969-1974. The current administrations' legacy will be devastatingly woeful. But looking toward The Greens or the AfD for salvation is akin to throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Good analyse of Habeck, in my eyes one of the most arrogant (unjustified) of current German politicians.
Not only the MSM polls indicate an increasing popularity of The Greens. MSM have been pushing them for quite some time now, more than it would be justified by there importance as an oppositional party; there is a much larger one by the way. Hidden agenda? It’s that wishful thinking/indoctrination/unprofessionalism of ARD/ZDF and some papers (SZ) that can truly make me mad.
