This will be very interesting. The video looks very promising. It's about time they make a real supercar, although it's not a "real" one to me.
I have to ask though. What's up with those Audi led lights?? Is this the first time BMW are leaving their legendary oval angel eyes??

As much as I agree with you I also have to disagree with your Audi LED light comment. Regardless of the shape of the light, BMW was the first to use a light running through a tube concept, so in essence Audi copied BMW.(y)

It has been explained a while ago by BMW design chiefs: BMW i cars will feature U-shaped main headlight & rear light graphics, instead of front quad coronas & L-shaped rear lights. It's a design characteristic special to BMW i sub-brand only. Regular BMWs will stick to headlight quad coronas (mind 4er & X4 concepts corona graphics!) and L-shaped rear lights.

Beside special light graphics the BMW i cars will also feature blue (or in some cases gray) frames around double kidney grille & around BMW roundels, and a characteristic black "stream flow" (extended rear side window) in the C-pillar. Hofmeister kink will be featured on some i cars only.

What will be BMW M's special design characteristic? Or will there ever be any stand alone M model like Mercedes' SLS or Audi's R8.

Well, I think that sucks, because there is nothing that screams more BMW then the typical angel eye lights. As say it again, I think it's a big thumb down for the shape of the LED lights in this small i( ideo. It's too Audish. But then again, when the A5 came, the rear looked very much like the 3 series... Competition indeed, but let's not exaggerate :(

Both you and me know that if anybody says LED lighting, everybody thinks Audi. BMW may have been first with the angel eyes etc, but real LED technology is pure Audi. Let's keep Audi out of this nice i8 discussion for now :)

I thought BMW was about driving, not LEDs and all sorts of useless "wow-factor" gadgets?

I have to ask though. What's up with those Audi led lights??
The i8 won't use LEDs, but "laser" light, an automotive first which, according to BMW offers the following advantages over LED units:

. " For a start, laser lighting is monochromatic, which means that the light waves all have the same length. And it is also what is known as a “coherent” light source, which means that its waves have a constant phase difference. As a result, laser lighting can produce a near-parallel beam with an intensity a thousand times greater than that of conventional LEDs. "

. Less than half the energy consumption.

. "A further feature of laser technology, which has important implications, is the size of the individual diodes. With a length of just ten microns (µm), laser diodes are one hundred times smaller even than the small, square-shaped cells used in conventional LED lighting, which have a side length of one millimetre."

. " Whereas LED lighting generates only around 100 lumens (a photometric unit of light output) per watt, laser lighting generates approximately 170 lumens. "

I wasnt referring to the technology, but the shape of the lights. It looks to Audish.

This is BMW to me:

And it goes all the way back to on of my all time favorites:

I really dont get the one stripe light... Coming from BMW? I'm actually in chock..
BMW should always keep their double lights. Always.
Just like VW should always have two center pipes in their Golf R... Where is the world heading...

Once again you're correct, but they have always been Christmas light arrangement. It's only the recent Audi models that have this look that you talk of while all the BMW did was use LEDs. As to the laser lighting for the i8. Meanwhile Audi are quietly planning to use OLED lighting in the not too distant future. Competition is hotting up.

What a shame 4 Series isn't getting them. BMW chose the cheap solution like Alfa with the 4C's headlights.

LED lights are becoming old tech once the i8 launches with Laser headlights. Not talking about Audi, just talking about LED having had a short life in car headlight tech...we're moving on.

is it the i-brand that prevent the use of traditional, quad angels? I don't think having a single strip is a problem, but the fact that a strip that borders the lower edge of the headlight has become an Audi trademark / signage now that they should prevent it? It's like MB when they ran out of ideas they put the strip on the top edge, but i just don't see why BMW need to do this too, even if it is supposed to have a different "meaning".
