CLS [First drives] New Mercedes Benz CLS (C218) First Drives - Autocar etc...

The Mercedes-Benz CLS (initially called the CLS-Class) is a series of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from December 2003 to August 2023. The original model was a four-door sedan based on the Mercedes E-Class platform, marketed as a four door coupé. An estate (shooting brake) model was later added to the model range with the second generation CLS.
I promised a translation of the german Auto-Motor-Sport Test, but I decided to translate just a few lines. First, I am a bit lazy, second, my english skills aren't that good.

So, here you go…

…[both cars] offer interior ambiente comparable to luxury limousines…
…every part of the Mercedes interior is of remarkable quality … but not as distinguished as in the predecessor…
…the CLS' turbo 3 Liter Diesel engine is pushing as brutally as an electric engine…
…Audi A7 is hardly cheaper than the CLS…
…The Mercedes has a higher loading capacity by about 100kg, due to less heavvy equipment options and its steel suspension, the all-purpose tuning of which is extra-ordinairily well done. Despite its 19“ wheels the Mercedes' suspension does a smoother job without losing control in curves…
…the Mercedes' victory is due to its even better security equipment, including its outstanding braking performance, especially on µ-split conditions…
…finally superior economy of the BlueEfficiency 3L-Diesel…[]…average test consumption was 8,7 liters per 100km…[]…even 5,9 liters per 100km were possible when cruising…

I hope this gives an impression, greetings to everyone here

Any chance to get a scan of the test in addition to this short translation (to give a look to the test numbers) ?

What do they say about what interior is better and what car has the best performance?.

Pretty much the opposite from Autobilds verdict about A7 vs CLS

What do they say about what interior is better and what car has the best performance?.
Concerning interior quality they say they're on par but that A7's interior design has an edge on exclusiveness (that depends a bit on one's taste, I guess).
Overall performance is rated "on par", either. A7 has advantages due to its all-wheel drive but (the current iteration of?) its start-stop-system leads to "thinking seconds" when starting…

Autocar - Mercedes CLS 350 review

What is it?

The Mercedes CLS 350 BlueEfficiency is the most efficient of the petrol versions of the new CLS saloon, or four-door coupe, as you might prefer to call it.

The new look brings a welcome muscularity to the CLS, without destroying the elegance of the original concept, and there’s plenty of space inside for four people and their luggage.

What’s it like?

The most impressive feature of our test car was the Eco-mode stop/start drivetrain, unusual in an automatic, which shut down and fired up the 3.5-litre V6 incredibly quickly and smoothly. In the time it took to swap your foot from the brake to the accelerator, the engine had spun up and was already providing torque to start pulling away.

It doesn’t ride quite as well as the equivalent E-class, but the chassis feels more focused and bump absorption is still very good on the 18-inch wheels.

The steering is one of the better electrical systems, though the weighting lacks consistency across the first quarter turn in each direction, compared with the best hydraulic systems.

Should I buy one?

At a few pounds short of £50,000, the CLS 350 BlueEfficiency has a slight price premium over its most obvious competitor, the Audi A7.

The cars are very equally matched and most buyers would probably make the decision between the two based on the appeal of their looks and the presence of various technologies or options - Quattro drivetrain or Distronic safety system, for example.

It’s worth pointing out that the sophistication of the CLS’s drivetrain meant that we managed an average of 31.7mpg over 300 miles of mixed town and country driving, which is impressive for any petrol automatic saloon, let alone one that can do 0-60mph in well under seven seconds.

Wow, great MPG.

I'm surprised in that it didn't ride as good as the E-Class that it basically is, I credit that to the probably harsher, more Sport oriented ride.

Hence I have ordered mine with 19 inch and AMG pack + airmatic.

Just put in the order for one.....:t-woohoo:,,,,,,, black on black, 18" wheels (pavement not that good ,here in Portugal!!),AMG pack, Airmatic and carbon fiber interior (saw this in Geneva, and it´s drop dead gorgeous!!,,,), oh, and the car parks itself :t-applaus,,,,next thing you know, I´ll get to stay home and send the car off on errands,,,

Congrats!! I'll be you're very excited!!

Post pics please when you get it. Nice to see that M-B has adopted the "Self-Park" thing, as I know the E-Classes don't have it yet, and witnessed its coolness when driving a 5-Series with it.

Well, the E-class cars kinda do. If you get the PARKTRONIC option on the U.S. models it comes with parking guidance. This tech doesn't quite park for you since you still have to provide the steering inputs but it does give you 'step-by-step' instructions on the MID of what to do, and when.

The new CLS is equipped with an electronic steering system which allows it the ability to 'steer'. Here's hoping the U.S. E-class gets the same steering system.

BTW, Congrats on the new car!! :D

Something tells me you lacked critical thinking at the time of your making that post.
I think you should reflect on what you just wrote because it stinks of supreme arrogance.

Typical people from Texas, dont know a joke when they see it ;) :D

Ps hope you realize it was a post I wrote last year.

And the idiosyncrasies of the typical Texans are?
Please enlighten me...

Seriously Chonkoa. Let it go, like I said, I wasn't serious in the first place.
I might do another roadtrip in US next year so perhaps I'll visit Texas.
Then you can invite me on a cup of coffe and give me a ride in your X6 :) Peace.

Please, lets focus on CLS.
