CLS-Class (C218) First drives: Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake

The CLS Shooting Brake is superbly refined, relatively spacious and striking to behold. It isn't a sports car but it does handle its bulk well in the corners. However, it doesn't come cheap. This 250 CDI starts from £1,785 more than the coupe, and although extra standard equipment includes easy-fold rear seats, rear air suspension and that automatic tailgate, it's still a tough pill to swallow. That said, at least you'll be safe in the knowledge that there's nothing out there quite like it - for now at least.

It's a very good all-rounder: stylish, cool, as practical as you're likely to need: a better drive than an E-Class, more desirable than an SUV. It's going to sell well. And it's also going to give Audi and BMW a headache - the A7 and 6-Series Gran Coupe are recent rivals to the CLS and now Merc's gone and set another target to beat.

Is it a coupé pretending to be an estate or vice versa? Either way, the Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake is an excellent new offering, albeit a rather pricey one

That burgendy one is luscious. At first I was skeptic about this car but now I fully approve of it. Unlike the A6 Avant and 5er Touring the E-Class Estate looks like a hearse and even with AMG kit the rear is still looks heavy. This shooting break is an excellent car for those who want a Merc Estate that's is pleasing to the eyes.

I love shooting breaks, but not feeling this one... they screwed the roof line, by making it so sloped, it looks more like a fast back than a shooting break. What I really wanna see is an A7 shooting break... that handsome front end with a proper shooting break rear would be all sorts of awesomeness.

This is true. The A7 could become wonderful if they make an Avant out of it! The fugly part, the rear, would be gone and much better resolved I would imagine.

As for the Shooting Brake...I'm starting to warm up to it. I have yet to see it irl, but that should be even better because the CLS doesn't photograph well
