Golf First drive reviews: VW Golf Mk7

That's where the new Seat Leon and next year's new Skoda Octavia come in, to fight the Focus, Astra, dumped c'eeds, i30s and so on. The Golf is worthy of and can command at least £2-3k premium above these other mass market brands..

Heheh, nobody is going to buy a Seat or Skoda over a Ford, Peugeot or Renault. Here in Europe. Maybe on your island, but not here. Seats and Skodas are only interesting for cheap VAG lovers.

^With Seat I would probably agree but Skoda has earned itself a hell of a reputation for solidly built cars that are super reliable at a great price. I know the Fabia is a little cracker.

Most core VW models have a great resale value, the Golf especially. In most European markets.

No kidding, I sold my wife's Mk6 GTI back to the dealer straight (no trade-in) and I got 58% of it's original price after 3 years, even in these depressing times.

That's impressive, especially in the UK where used cars lose value at a terrible rate.

How come we haven't heard anything about the new Octavia?
The new Rapid will allow the next-gen Octavia ( sue soon enough ) to move slightly upmarket, and get bigger, more in-line withe Focus, Astra prices than before.

Thank you Hoff. I found strange that we saw the new Leon first then the Golf and no news about the Octavia.

Given South-Africa's portion of the global car market is but just a blip on the radar, PSA and Renault does not seem to make any inroads into our market at least not worth mentioning. We are a very 'unique' and specific market more or less a mirror of the U.S. market - whereas they buy Ford F150 pickup's/trucks #1, we buy Toyota (Hilux/Fortuner). For the rest we just love our VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz's. Thus commercial it's Toyota and with cars VW reigns supreme here. Being a "third world" market we are unfortunately buying more and more into Korean, Indian and Chinese brands...:(

I know, I know. Is same history here, lots and lots of Toyotas, Nissans and Suzukis. The european presence is mainly for premium germans cars, even VW struggle to cut it. However the premium are really premium, lots of AMG and M, after all, this is THE cocaine country.
Is different in Brazil or Argentina; there, VW and Fiat are the top sellers, and then come the french, plus the euro GM and Ford. The sad thing is, all these home made cars are very crappy, always one generation behind their euro counterparts.

Regards!

Like the mk3 Audi A3 that it shares the VW group’s new-school 'MQB' (modular transverse) chassis with, the latest Golf is a car that corners very competently, with less understeer and body roll than its forebears and an extra sniff of agility thanks to its lower kerb weight. Its electrically assisted steering feels better than the Audi's, managing a decent impression of feel, especially with the smidge of extra weight it boasts in the drive select’s sportiest setting. Push on and the handling is safe rather than scintillating, but there’s plenty of promise for when sportier Golfs – including the new 218bhp GTI – arrive next year.

I'm curious about this since I enjoyed the steering in the new A3.

The reason I question this is during the time the wife had the Mk6 GTI and I got one of our managers a A3 2.0T S/Line, basically the same car and I couldn't tell any difference in steering feel. Now I know this is new Golf EVO are talking about but it's also the new A3 which is again basically the same car, maybe they are being hyper-critical with the Audi compared to the Golf or there really is a difference this time though like you I found the new A3 to be quite decent at this and not that dissimilar to the 1 series.

^If true about being even better than the A3 then this new Golf is without a doubt the one to beat.... and own.
