3 Series (F30) F30 328i reliability

The sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series consists of the BMW F30 (sedan version), BMW F31 (wagon version, marketed as 'Touring') and BMW F34 (fastback version, marketed as 'Gran Turismo') compact executive cars. The F30/F31/F34 generation was produced from October 2011 to 2019 and is often collectively referred to as the F30. For the sixth generation, the coupé and convertible models were spun off to create the new BMW 4 Series nameplate.

Hi guys,

So I don't really keep track of reliability or things of that nature, so I I thought I just ask you guys point-blank about the 328i. My father is thinking about buying a 328i and I was wondering if there's any known problems with the engine, especially since it's turbocharged. I know that the inline 6 turbos have had some issues? Also is there anything I should tell him to be on the look-out for?

Thanks guys!

Now how is this for living in South-Africa:

You buy a new BMW

BMW SA has a thing called BMW MOTORPLAN

This idea started back in the 90's by BMW for BMW customers.

As of 2012 the BMW MOTORPLAN fund was R2 Billion (USD $200 000 000 million strong)

It works like this:

Your motorplan is included in theb retail price of every BMW bought.

What you get is:

5 year/100 000km maintenance plan, every thing for free except top-up oil, fuel and tires. Also do you get the 2 year unlimited warranty. BMW-ON-CALL road side assistance on a toll free number. Whatever goes wrong is fixed, claimed and replaced with new, no questions asked (I know and yes it's true)

This applies to Premium Select or used cars under Motorplan. Also within the 6th year, under 125 000km you can extend the Motorplan for another two years (F30 320d +/- R25 000.00 / S2500.00) for another 100 000km's. M-cars you can't.

Most SA, OEM's has adapted the idea, MBSA years ago but with every service you contributed e.g. 1st 10%, 2nd 20% and so on. Since 2012, MBSA is on par with BMW SA's Comprehensive Motorplan.

So, as long as you drive a new BMW or one within the 5 year Motorplan you give a sh!t about reliability.

N54 had quite a few HPFP failures. I have't heard or read the same about N20. You are probably better of looking asking in car specific forum.

Yeah, you may be right. I was hoping not having to join another forum though.

I own a 2012 BMW with the turbo-4, I love the engine, I am used to NA's and I wasn't a big fan of the N54 motor, maybe i thought it would feel faster than it did, but the n20 definately feels like a solid motor, very smooth, a little loud on idle,

I've had it for Over a year now, its an everyday driver, no issues yet, and really good mileage for the performance it returns,

I don't think anybody makes bread and butter engines like BMW, they are really smooth and reassuring, this one is no-different
