^Considering how much extra acceleration it has over everything else in the test it's hotlap isn't that impressive. I suppose there's only so much wellie you can use before it's wasted away in a cloud of smoke.

I watched some Exige S reviews, and indeed it seems to be a very great car. But I really dislike the looks. I wish Alfa Romeo would benchmark it for the 4C they are developing. The Huyara laptime is really not that good, when the MP4-12C is so close to it, and both the Aventador and 458 Italia are sometime even faster than the Macca, so what about the F12. And with the new 911 GT3 and 911 Turbo that is going to be so much faster, then alos all the other hypercars like the P1 and F70. So the Huayra laptime is even quite bad. I know the LFA was not built to be the fastest, but Paganis still are built with best performance in mind. But the excuse of the bad laptime could also be that the driver(s) did not push it to the max, nobody would want to damage/crash such a expensive car.

Again for me the winner is Boxster S. This is why:
- Exige GT too radical
- Huayra too exotic
- MP4-12C too unemotional
- 911 still the same old one, just better
- GT86 too slow

Boxster just has a good amount of everything. Best "all-round" sportscar (not GT).

Just a tiny, little bit faster than Aventador, McLaren and Ferrari

And disqualifiying the Huayra for being too exotic or too expensive or too little production, is like taking a Patek Philippe out of a watch contest and expecting a Seiko to win. (that coming from a Seikoholic like me :D )

I know, like for the Zonda, so for the Huayra there is so much left for improvement, or better to say, to let free. I already like the new front, som much better.

Well, I don't know what ECOTY is, but I would see a Ferrari being elected "Car of the Year". Rather something like A3, 3 Series or Boxster.

..but I think it was a private test
I prefere compare homologous-laptimes
...totally agre with the second part of the your post

There's nothing wrong with an exotic like a Zonda C12S winning ECotY. So how can I contradict myself regarding the Huayra?

Simple: I'm a loyal subscriber, I've been reading EVO since the first installment and I can tell from experience that previous juries - made up of a proper number of road testers - would not have rated the Huayra as highly given some glaring drawbacks on such an expensive, boutique car. This is a time of austerity, pragmatism and responsibility and whilst a car as wonderful as the Huayra should be celebrated for the all the emotional romanticism it evokes, holistically it ought not to be judged Car of the Year over cheaper yet more complete products like the Porsche Boxster S.

In the past the EVO judging panel (and the subsequent scoring table) would've been larger and more representative of the overall spirit of the publication compared with just 5 or so final scorers.

But, following that logic, the GT86/BZR have even more merit than the Boxter, and then, a RS Clio more than the GT86, etc

For me, in these days of mega companies and profit chasing, just the fact that 50 guys in a house in a little town at the Emilia Romagna can handmade a car that rivals the finest swiss watchery or italian jewelry in detailing AND keeps on par or exceeds cars coming from a multi billion empires like VAG, Toyota or MB, or F1 teams like McLaren and Ferrari, plus debuts active aerodynamics on roads cars is more than enough to validate its first place, regardless of the price.

Besides, for me the price is very well justified in the many hours put in design of all those endless little details, overlooked in every other car of the world, Bentley, Rolls and Buggati included, plus the execution of those little arts pieces, which in many cases cost like a major part of another car.
You can dislike the Huayra as much as you can -you're free to- but to take merit to the only car that comes to my mind that can be called art and is capable to outrun an Aventador or a McLaren b/c the price or a bit of jerkyness on the transmission, is no sense, IMO

Regards

Evo said:
A spec table comparison fares the BMW well, too. It weighs 45kg more than the Porsche and possesses nearly 30bhp less, but with its in-line six-cylinder engine turbocharged (and the 911’s flat-six naturally aspirated, as tradition dictates), it boasts 332lb ft – 44lb ft more than the Carrera and enough for it to lag just 0.1sec behind in the 0-62mph dash (at 4.9sec).
Performance should be very close on track, then, and while price is far from a key factor at evo Car of the Year, the Porsche starts at £71,449, well over double the BMW’s £29,995. Could a giant killing be on the cards?

That would never happen. If it was the other way around, with the BMW being lighter and more powerful, yeah, then it could have been close ;)

or put it like this.... If I was the driver of the bimmer and you the Porsche driver then it would and could happen ;)

Pagani Huayra vs McLaren MP4-12C video

I saw this earlier in the Evo app, it truly is epic. There is really nothing between the two - Huayra is probably a little quicker at the end of the straight, but MP4 is quicker putting power down out of a turn. Any way, worth watching. Oh and the much maligned McLaren sounds much better.

As for the ECOTY winner, for me the winner is the Boxster. I never really cared for Metcalfe's opinion. He is a consumate supercar whore, anything less by just the fact that it is not a supercar makes in unworthy in his books.

And yes, why no F12? They explained why no RS4, even why no 458 spider, but no mention of F12.
