Evo ECOTY 2022

David Vivian being on the judging panel - That I did not see coming, nor want to see it. Would have far preferred to see the initials HC or even - for sentimentality sake - HM in points table.

That being said, I'm not at all unhappy with the judges' findings and I'm thrilled for Maserati.

I guess they updated the GR86 because that used to be regarded as somewhat of a luke warm turd.

The original GT86 suffered from one standout issue: its engine's power delivery was as flat as its layout. As a result all of the promise suggested by its exciting-on-paper mechanical setup never materialised because of the NA 2.0 engine's lack of torque in the midrange and - more surprisingly - its unwillingness to reach for the redline.

From everything I've read and watched, the new 2.4 litre engine appears to address these drawbacks substantially. And, for anyone living at sea-level the GR86 is now a proper entry-level sports car that's fast enough to get you locked up on a public road while still affording accessible limits.

Ferrari 296 +190kg
Maserati MC20 +295kg

The number in the overview for the Maserati is wrong, it weighted 1700kg, so +225 kg. Anyway the oficial weight of both these two italians are dry weight, which EVO should have made clearer
They have made it clear, they stated the fuel weight, which makes it clear that even as dry weights they're off by 140-180kg. And yes, it is clear from the calculated weight and fuel weight that the MC20 actually weighed 1700kg.

The weight of the Mercedes is absolutely mind-blowing. A 2000 kg Roadster! What a POS.

The true winner here is without a shadow of a doubt the Toyota. I am also thoroughly disappointed by the M4 CSL. Don't see how this could happen after the M5 CS which is a much, much worse car as a base to start with.

I genuinely didn’t expect the winner.

Yup. Heavy and overpriced. At that weight they might as well have included a Lucid Air.

The calculated weight is not the same as dry weight. It is wet weight with an empty gas tank….

That was the dry weight in my day. Without oil, coolant and brake fluid would be shipping weight.
Dry weight is without any fluid. It is of course difficult to know how much this is (thats why some manufacteurs love to give dry weight). But it shouldn’t be more than 20-30 kg, so anyway Ferrari/Maserati are well over their claims here.
Shipping weight is with more liquids than dry I think, enough to transport the car from fabric to stores, but I dont know the excact definition.

You guys kill me with this obsession with weight. Particularly with the SL. What should a luxury GT with a V8 and all the safety junk required or needed in an open top car, weigh?

FYI, members’ posts from the ECOTY thread in the Scans section have been copied here for discussion continuity.

It’s not the greatest ECOTY lineup, it has to be said. Seems like they couldn’t source enough proper contenders.
The SL shouldn’t have been in the lineup as it’s not really ECOTY material, I don’t think.
Some omissions include the Audi RS3 and 911 Carrera GTS. Given its release this year, the new BMW M2 ought to have been made available but it appears that market launch and actual production availability were very different things in 2022. Roll on 2023.
