CLK-Class (C209) EVO Drives the CLK500 (388PS)

The Mercedes-Benz C209 is the second generation CLK-Class, launched in 2002. The car was available in both hardtop coupé (C209) and in soft-top convertible (A209). Although its design and styling was derived from the E-Class, the mechanical underpinnings were based on the smaller C-Class. It was succeeded by the E-Class C207. Production: 2001–2009.
Well EVO is a all-out sport magazine in most of their positions/thinking so a non-AMG Mercedes (unless it is a S-Class) isn't going to peg their meter. The CLK is starting to show its age too.

Agreed. :t-cheers:

Also, the CLK isn't a true sports car. It was designed to be a luxury cruiser with sporty pretensions, and it can be driven sporty. Of course, if you have professional sportscar drivers (like the guys who work for EVO) drive it around, you'll hear nothing but complaints. Too soft, no sporty enough etc.

They never take into consideration what the car was made to do. And that's my gripe with most car magazines these days. :t-banghea

Sorry to say, but that is the most clumsy article I`ve come across this year!
Very ham-handed coming from an automotive journalist. I know some 10 to 13 year olds who could come up with a more convincing and educated review than this short-handed bs.:bangin:

I`m by no means bashing the creater of the thread, just the article.

Agreed. EVO does this a lot, they will give a vehicle a not so good rating because it isn't a race car. If they judged the vehicle for what it is then it might pick up a better score.

DB9 for example: Yes it doesn't have the connection of some of it's other competition but it's supposed to be a heavy, luxurious cruiser..as a sports car it isn't that good, but as a GT..

Or the S550 for example: "It's good alright but it's no M5", it's not supposed to be :t-banghea

Exactly! See what EVO did to the 450SEL 6.9... They totally abused it. :eusa_doh:

A classic like the 6.9 shouldn't be abused, especially by a bunch of extremely sports-biased journalists like the guys who work for EVO. They should enjoy the car for what it was designed to do, namely high-speed cruising on the Autobahn or Bundestrassen. :usa7uh:

I have not read the S65 vs 6.9 article yet, but will do so tonight. ;)

Oh dear God. :t-banghea

What a ridiculous and childish statement to come from supposed "professional drivers / journalists". Anyone who compares an S550 (or an S65 AMG for that matter) to an M5 needs a reality check. :t-crazy2:

Some people will actually stop reading a magazine because of comments like this. The old "they've lost all credibility" statement comes in handy in times like these. :D

Lost all reliability by stating a self-evident fact? Now someone who judges a magazine for that needs a reality check as well... :t-crazy2: (And just to be sure, I don't mean you, Chris! ;))

Now in all honesty EVO did not exactly say that about the S-Class, but something of a similar nature. However i do recall EVO said the S8 less sporty and more expensive than the M5, which is true, but i honestly don't see how that makes the S8 any less great :icon_roll

I'm torn on EVO, because i do buy every magazine they make but when it comes to actual reviews ..

In my opinion they usually rate Sports cars as they should be rated, but when it comes to a non sports car, whether that be a luxury car or what not the rating goes down :t-hands:

Now i know EVO rates vehicles on their "thrill of driving" but maybe they could expand that..

:eusa_thin

Definitely. :usa7uh:

One reason I never pay much attention to placings in magazines is because I know that they have their own opinions etc.

Still, when Car and Driver compares economy cars, they still ranted about the poor acceleration, skidpad numbers etc. As if buyers of these types of cars actually care about that. :t-crazy2:

The M5 and Audi S8 are two completely different cars. No doubt the M5 is more hardcore, but the S8 isn't supposed to be a car for the racetrack. The S8 is in the same class as the MB S63 AMG: refined and powerful über-sedans meant for the Autobahn.
