Definition of engine masterpiece

that 3 litre diesel in the 535d is an amazing engine. I wish we got diesel engines here in CA. Im a little bitter.

I've driven 535d :D Great car and engine :usa7uh:

isnt the 335 turbo going to be petrol? Or is that the same engine in the 535d? Anyway, I agree if they dont bring that turbo here I am going to cry. I really hope BMW goes to turbo engines leaving their competition way behind. Every one will emulate BMW and start creating N/A engines to compete with teh M devision, but as soon as theyve done that BMW will (hopefully) switch to turbo charging and blow them away. hahaa

more torque than M5 :D

thats not really a fair comparison. THe M5 engine was only built for monster HP and not torque. Come on man. You know thats not fair. ;)

It's not the same engine, this engine is based off of the new 3.0 I6.

I know but its so cool :D

I agree. I would get a 535d, with the DMS ECU (onboard computer) and the sport package (with the 19" wheels and sportseats and suspension). The DMS chip boost the torque to 470 lb-ft and the horsepower to 340 (i think). Then I would challenge some hot shot in their new M5. That would be awsome. :usa7uh:

To be fair to the V10 in the M5, it actually does make monster torque - albeit a little too high up in the rev range - for a naturally aspirated engine of this displacement. Sure, I feel it gives a little to the Lambo V10 low down but BMW engineers' intent is quite clear: make a amazing power from a high revving V10 unit without compromising reliability. I have a suspicion that the M5's V10 just loves to live in the upper realms of its rev range.

This is one seriously unstressed monster despite what its 8250 rpm redline may suggest. My gut feel is that BMW can get another 1000 rpm out of this engine without even breaking a sweat.

Nevertheless, BMW manages to achieve over 100 Nm per litre for this engine which is spot on for current naturally aspirated spark ignition technology. 520 Nm is still a helluva lot of torque - especially when when your power curve is well on its way through the stratosphere.

Sure, torque is very important engine statistic but the rate at which the torque is delivered is equally important in performance cars.

So, after my 2 cents here's a thought: imagine if they could get a twin turbo 3 litre diesel six to rev to 6000 rpm?!? Not quite possible yet, but who knows what the future holds in store for diesel technology?

Yes, I do still do believe that BMW are the best engine makers in the world. Irrespective of my passion for Boxer engines...

That's a fact, i konw some guy who work with BMW, and he told me that M5's engine develop in test more than 440KW at 9000rpm, ( always a 5.0L)

That's around 598hp wich is possible for sure.

:t-cheers:

Well, than check this out:
the 700 RS, 100 hp per litre in 1960 using a Boxer engine.

IE, you amaze with your knowledge of BMW.

I had no idea about this little flat twin BMW. Tell me, is this Boxer engine any long lost relation to the twins in BMW motorcycles?

Kudos.

Yes it is, it actually is one of those twins (the engine was taken from BMW Motorcycle division).

The BMW M5 V10 engine is superb I must say the least, but BMW does not make engines to be torquey. BMW builds, for the M division, Naturally Aspirated engines that are highly compressed to produce the necessary revs, like race cars, to match the hp. Meaning, the engines that you see on the M3 and M5, and future M roadster(m3 engine), are high compression engines.

I think its a matter of breathing; No cars have better "lungs" than BMW`s and they sound similar, even regardless if its a 4-6-8 or 10(Not the diesels)old or new.
That goes back to the 328

But the high reving is also important, for the sporting feeling, the heritage by throttle.

I wonder how the new BMW-F1 engine will work; and if the same engine will be available in the new M3-or at least a close relative of it?
