They are interestingly stupid. It's design for the sake of design and not for function. Try opening that door while holding a bag full of groceries. You'll need to either have the door resprayed or you'll brake a finger. Or both.

I'm seriously tired of how badly engineered/designed modern cars can be.
The only good news is that this forum got the design based on the camo pics :D

Well, as the old saying goes..."Beauty knows no pain" ;)

I think it will be a general trend, and we will simply get used to it. Aesthetically I prefer these over the flush ones started by Tesla, but on an SUV it puts them even higher, definitely less accessible for kids, or as previously mentioned to anyone when the hands are busy.

There will be several ways to open the doors on the upcoming X5. No doubt the doors will function hands free too, like the 7er.

If they expected it, it’s peak stupidity to use this kind of door handles.

A Chinese multi billion dollar company doesn't know the Chinese rules? Yeah right.
Absolutely impossible. What they have done is allowed now and will be allowed in the future. We don't even know how this mechanism works to begin with.

Thing is, and it might be surprising.....but..... you don't have to buy this car if it doesn't work for you.
I know it's a shock but try to embrace it.

Doorhandles of automobiles considered by many to be the most beautiful ever produced:

The abiity to suffer for the sake of beauty and art.
I love the gull wing door handle mechanism, I love the Model 3/Y door handles for the same reason. It's a cool old school mechanical way of having fully flush handles even though isn't as practical to use in some situations.

These types of door handles works in a car like the Gullwing which you use occationally and every trip is a special experience, but as a daily car not so much.

Especially in the case of SUV/elevated ride height SAC vehicles, a more practical solution is not only absolutely warranted, but the perceived "more rugged, mechanical" character of conventional door handles could be desirable in terms of aesthetics. Very clean, unblemished flank expanse can be very welcome in the context of sleek sedans, estates, coupes/cabs and sportscars. IMHO, flush fitting doorhandles that offer a manual, grip friendly "pull out" function are great for these vehicles. For example, a "hybrid solution" similar to that of the BMW i4. The aspect of "sleek monolithic elegance" is prioritized.
