Daimler & BMW Partnership Talk Thread

A week or so ago, BMW signed an agreement with FIAT for sharing technical components for the next MINI, Fiat and Alfa Romeo small-sized models;Daimler has also announced some time ago that it will go on its own to develop the future A- & B-Class models. So nobody expected that a Daimler-BMW alliance could possibly take shape now, in addition to the result of the first talks between the two constructors. Today, Motor Authority broke the ice with a totally unexpected article: Daimler and BMW will announce a possible partnership at the end of November, precisely at the Los Angeles Motor Show. If so, then Mercedes-Benz and BMW won't share technical platforms and engines, but parts hidden to customers' eyes, such as air-conditioning units and braking systems, as some officials from the 2 companies hinted.

Mercedes-Benz-Blog -- Unmistakable. Unique. Classy. Mercedes-Benz.: BREAKING NEWS: Daimler and BMW to announce possible partnership at the end of November

Re: Daimler and BMW to announce possible partnership at the end of November

Now I know why Daimler has ditched the "-Benz" of the previous Daimler-Benz!
It's to save place for Daimler-BMW!:D Dr.Z. knew it all along!!

Joke apart, it's a good thing. Sharing invisible components is just a logical step given their similarly premium products, and will allow them to achieve similar scale-savings than VAG or Toyota despite their small size compared to these giants.

Re: Daimler and BMW to announce possible partnership at the end of November

I must admit, Daimler-BMW sounds pretty cool

Daimler-BMW, sounds pretty good actually. Imagine the products that would leave the factory of such a company!

Top handling, top performance, top quality and top comfort! What's there not too like? :eusa_danc

Oh yeah, the price! :D

Seeing what MB did to McLaren, I am not so hopeful. Both have there traits and philosophies, let them stick to it. Imposing one on the other is going to only mess things up. Also what will we all have to bicker about if they merged. :D

Re: Daimler and BMW to announce possible partnership at the end of November

In the case Quandts & Co. acquire Daimler, a holding would be created: consisting of two independent companies: BMW AG, and Daimler AG. Institutionally the cooperations would be much easier to achieve - since the owners of both companies would be the same.

But the operations of Daimler & BMW would be strictly separated.

Think PAH, WAG, PAG situation. Yet much better organized, and less family business involved.

So, technically BMW would not own Daimler , nor vice versa. Yet both would have same owner: the holding. Stakeholders of Holding would be joined stakeholders of BMW & Daimler: Quandt family being far largest individual stakeholder of the Holding. The problem is the Quandts want to have a controlling stake in the Holding, and are now - so say the rumors - trying to find the best way to achieve this objective.

:t-hands:

But this will not happen anytime soon: perhaps in three years, not earlier.

The "handling and performance" in my post was meant to be a reference to BMW. :usa7uh:

Re: Daimler and BMW to announce possible partnership at the end of November

Does this mean the BMW and Merc fanboys are never going to fight ever again :D

Re: Daimler and BMW to announce possible partnership at the end of November

^If so..
it will be the end of days and end of this forum
so i hope not:D

Re: Daimler and BMW to announce possible partnership at the end of November

It makes sense to share stuff like air conditioning system, or bolts or clips, various electric motors like windscreen wiper, mirror motors... it's not like they're going to share the chassis or engine, something that I'm sure BMW will never share.
It's a good thing imo, it's going to lower maintenance cost of these cars... at least parts will become twice as common as before, and there may be aftermarket stuff.. I remember owning this rather unpopular Volvo and virtually ALL parts needs to be shipped from Switzerland, no aftermarket parts at all.

Re: Daimler and BMW to announce possible partnership at the end of November

Well it might be a real love fest at corporate level ...but can you seriously imagine the BMW M guys and the AMG guys being enthusiastic about sharing stuff?

...BTW, I realize this has not been suggested ....I'm just imagining future possibilities ;)

Of course, who else could it refer to? ;)

But seriously, instead of a happy union of everything good about both the brands what we will probably end up with is a clash of the different philosophies, middle of the road products that probably don't appeal to customers of either side and unhappy designers/engineers blaming the other side for the mess.

Re: Daimler and BMW to announce possible partnership at the end of November

^ I agree,MB is just too powerful in it's philosophies so it'll impose it all on everyone like what they did with McLaren, this is nothing more than parts sharing just like both being supplied from the same supplier.Anything co-operation on a higher level like engines, chassis and cutting edge-tech MB will never share it coz it'll compromise it's supremacy in that field.

OT does anyone know why Daimler-Benz isn't used anymore?

Re: Daimler and BMW to announce possible partnership at the end of November

Hmmm... I don't see the cooperation reaching the levels Eni suggested. Keep in mind Daimler has 2x the market capitalization of BMW and I doubt the Quandt family has enough for acquiring the whole company, especially since it would have to provide a premium over the market price for the deal to happen.
