Now that the burden of Chrysler has been expunged from Daimler I think Mercedes and BMW seem like two companies very aligned in purpose. I take this as good news.

Respect to MB for contributing lot of high tech safety and comfort technologies from ABS to Pre Scan, but engine and chassis technology is not exactly it's strong point vs BMW.

Mercedes has a lot of green engine tech on the horizon. And while they may not be the masters of sporty chassis, they are at comfort.
Still they both have competencies to bring to the table, and in any case if it's for items such as aircon etc. we probably wont even notice. This should be good for both of them.

Mercedes has a lot of green engine tech on the horizon. And while they may not be the masters of sporty chassis, they are at comfort.

Well don't forget that MB had those awards before BMW plus the voters votes for the high revving engine so it's natural the V10,V8 won not because they rule but they go well with the mentality of the voters.Having said that i really wonder why Ferrari's awesome V8 in Scud and V12 599 GTB didn't get it,both surely match if not exceed the high rev expectations of the voters!
MB engines are just made according to their taste and thinking,not doin high rev eninges doesn't mean u can't do it as MB already proved they can do it pretty well but MB has a fetish for nig blocks and mega torque coz that suits it's effortless performance style best

i dont think the BMW fans are understanding that MB is known for being ruthless and near stupid when it comes to partnerships..
they more or less force their values on their partners..
Allthough BMW sells more cars.. its still a smaller company..
And I dont think they will be able to take the pressure from MB if there was to be a full blown merger..
So for the sake of BMW i really hope they dont go further than some simple component sharing..

The day I BMW and MB start sharing interior parts, is the day I'll turn my back on MB forever and become a full time Porsche fan. After all, Porsche are entering the sedan market, will be offering a GT(new 928) which means that I could live without MB in my life. I don't find this partnership thingy exciting at all.

Oh yes, you mean Porsche who uses a superb VW V6 in the Cayenne, a supremely powerful Audi diesel too, and the brand new VW GPS in the 911? Yeah, they don't share parts with anyone, that's for sure...
And of course, the Cayenne shares nothing with the Touareg. Nor with the Q7.
Honestly, I prefer having a common A/C between MB and BMW than buying a Porsche and founding a VW logo on more than half the pieces, and fearing everytime I start the car that the GPS could display the VW logo...

Read what is known! BMW & Mercedes will share some parts invisible to the customer eye. THATS IT. People on this forum are dreaming with their heads in the clouds! These two companies will never merge...Please!!!!! They will only try to keep material and component cost down by both fighting for better prices from suppliers = ecomony of scale. Anyway with Daimlers history of mergers...I wrote a letter to Herr Jurgen Schrempp in 1998. I told him that I was unhappy about the merger...I am an avarege human being, but some things are so obvious! I told him it won't work...Daimler-Benz PR replied...Well I was right, wasn't I?

Yes, And I have the Daimler-Benz Letters/Letterhead to proof it. 2X Letters in total. They asured me that the Daimler-Chrysler Merger would extend the reach of MB etc. We all know the end... Thats why - BMW & Merc will keep even sharing to a minimum, these days with rising feul prices and the biggest economies in turmoil, they will not make radical desicions. Sharing will probably be between Fiat+Alfa Romeo+Mini+A&B Class - Maybe Smart? Merc were searching for a partner for the next gen. A & B Class vehicles.
