So, this is verging on off-topic, but unlike many other such posts that get thrown out in this thread, this one is a nice message... it's positive. I'm not sure if this got picked up internationally or not, so forgive me if this is old news.
100 years ago today, Thomas Moore, an ex-army captain that served his country in the pacific theatre of WWII, was born. At the age of 99, he set out to celebrate his upcoming 100th birthday by walking 100 laps of his garden, this endeavor, commencing in early April, was to raise money for British NHS (national health service) charities being stretched by the coronavirus outbreak. His target was to raise £1000. The story of this spread, got picked up by mainstream media, and then similarly social media.
As of today, his 100th birthday "Captain Tom" has raised £32,500,000. That is ******* astonishing. In tribute, and combination with media coverage, a music single - a cover of "You'll never walk alone" was released, featuring Captain Tom, and sung by 'popular' musician Michael Ball. This shot to number 1 in the UK charts, and holds the position today (his 100th birthday), meaning he's also a double world record breaker. He's also been awarded the honorary rank of Colonel, so Captain Tom is now Colonel Tom. Amongst many other tributes, today a flypast was laid on by the RAF - a Spitfire and a Hurricane - over his house in Yorkshire. A petition is currently running to get him knighted... to become Sir Thomas Moore, it has 1.4 million signatures (I've signed it, I donated too)
He's undoubtedly a figurehead for anything positive that can come from all this in the UK, and as an individual has done more to inspire kindness here than pretty much anyone I can think of, happy birthday Colonel Thomas Moore.
