Vs CarMag Shootout : BMW 1M vs Audi RS3 (Video)

:D:D hmm quite a difference ;) It's easy to say even without the lap times that the RS3 was slower than the 1M :)
1M - The pony from hell :D

RS3 looses too much in mid turn

Imagine the next M3 to be slightly better than 1M, then we are going to have a real killer car and the opponents need to watch out.

A 5-door hatch against a 2 door coupe?

I don't see it as a fair comparison. TT-RS would be a valid comparison.

It would only be fair and valid if it was Z4 with M version. At least 1M and RS3 share the same price tag and can transport 4 adults. Fun to know that 1M has larger trunkspace than a RS3. In Sweden TT-RS is expensive and closer to Z4 sdrive35is.

Not just slightly. It will be a whole lot better :D

You're acting as if this is something new :)
The RS3 has been tested against the 1M by pretty much every self respecting outlet, this is nothing new really.

Buying demographic?

I was looking at both vehicles. I was close to ordering the RS3 (brain) but 1M (heart) won! Also tested a TT-RS but it was neither practical enough (2 small kids) or in budget (new), I'd have considered used.

Saw my first RS3 in the flesh last week at a supermarket. Very nice in white but looked just like any other A3.

I think the 1M looks amost as much as every other E82... maybe not entirely true but both are just souped up versions of a very mundane car.

TT-RS is irrelevant because of price. At least here. A Z4M would fit better.

The RS3 is really not a friend of curves... It's such a shame that they even gave it a RS badge. I would rather call it a S3+.
I mean, RS should stand for magic, like they did with RS4 B7 and the R8.
RS3 is a rocket in straights for sure. But damn, this car looks old now. Bring on that new A3 Audi!!

But I understand that the RS3 isn't that hard to tune in that respect.

The B7 RS4 was brilliant. We can only hope for Audi to make something like that again. That would be like BMW making another CSL...

It's slower but is that really the point :t-hands: since these two brands approach performance from totally different perspectives with BMW majoring on dry weather grip and entertainment and Audi majoring on all weather ability and security.

You buy which appeals to you most and which suits your situations best. :t-cheers:

P.S.
Since BMW openly compare the 1M against the TTRS instead of the RS3 then maybe it's perfectly understandable for someone to say why the RS3 and not the TTRS. :eusa_thin

Only one comparing BMW with TT is BMW UK. Besides BMW UK added this comparison before RS3 was on sale on their webpage.. My point though is that you dont see this on BMW Sweden, BMW Germany or BMW USA webpage comparing 1M with TT-RS. Saying BMW openly compare 1M against TT-RS isnt 100% true. Everyone is free to compare with whatever they want but saying 1M vs RS3 isnt valid is just wrong.

If you want to know what the next M3 is going to be, imagine the 1M nimbleness, due to similar weight, with ~450 PS and ~550 Nm and better M-Diff, so better grip. And also better look and better features.

IMO this A3 deserves the RS badge as well as the X5 and X6 deserve the M badge. ;)

With those insanely flared wheel arches? Nah, you reaching. Definitely.
M3 looks even more mundane, then.

Not at all. The regular M3 is for that job. B7 RS4 fits in between E46 and E92 M3.

Exactly, and according to the spypics, I am glad they fixed this and gave the M3 much more flared fenders, especially in the rear. It looks like a C AMG BS in a better execution.

They're both the same Golf, but one is only for two persons. BMW can compare them with both, it doesn't matter much other than the fact that the TT is a bit faster than the A3.
And why the RS3 is being compared to the 1M? I mean really, that's even a question?

That's my point, regardless of how many people a car can fits surely the number of doors need to be considered and then there's the body shape also. Point being there's too many variables to be considered and are different between the RS3 and 1M to truly class them as competitors. They are both very good at what each manufacturer intended them to do, as a small coupe that can carry four adults and entertain to the max the 1M is without equal at this price and as a very quick cross country muncher that will allow anyone with even modest driving skills to approach its limits without scaring the shit out of them or their dog in the boot the RS3 has few equals.

Both equally brilliant but for very different reasons.

It would be just as great, from a BMW perspective. Another RS4, just as good, or even better, than the B7 would be just as great as if BMW would make another CSL out of the M3. Comparing the RS4 and CSL has nothing to do with it.
