Vs CarMag Shootout : BMW 1M vs Audi RS3 (Video)

The RS4 came at a time when high revving V8 engines in a normal car were considered unheard of, it also had a type of suspension which was also more advanced than its competitors, so it appeared to be even better than it actually was, when compared to the RS5 the RS4 isn't that special by today's standard and nor was it that special compared to the E92 M3.

The sole reason we aren't thinking of the RS5 as fondly is weight, the RS5 is just far too heavy to be competitive or a true leader of the pack.

Before it came out you said it would become a leader. :D

LOL, I'm kidding, even if we have insider sources, we can't know for sure while a car is yet in development.

By the way, it is still funny how all car comparisions turn into brand comparisions.

Back to topic, IMO the BMW 1M is a good compromise between an Audi RS3 and a Porsche Cayman R. The Audi TT-RS is a niche product that BMW does not have, which would be called Z4 M.

The feeling of egg on my face is something I'll never live down and I am sure many here will continue to remind me about that one. lol Ufortunately the commitment didn't seem to be there to address the weight or some other reason but the RS5 ended up pig heavy and as such it couldn't be the car we had hoped. It was like a prize fighter fighting with one hand tied behind his back, occasionally he would land the odd blow but more often than not he would be the one taking the beating.

By the way, it is still funny how all car comparisions turn into brand comparisions.

It wasn't turning into a brand thing, only dr Dunkel and Klier mentioning the RS4 and M3 as examples, my inclusion of the RS5 was only to highlight how good or bad the RS4 actually was.

Levi, you've done another boob, the Cayman R is less of a rival to the 1M than the TTRS is, for a start it's a 2 seater only not a 2+2 and it's more like a CSL version of the 1M. The TTRS is the closest rival that the 1M probably has but due to price it's seldom chosen in comparisons.

No, RS5 is more like a sumo fighter against the kick boxer M3.
The only way to win against it is to ram it off the road... if it can catch it ;)

I didn't mean you. It was meant in general for all thread in the I/C.

Rivals are usually meant directly as for example M5 vs. E AMG vs. RS6. Same prices, same power, same body,... But often rival can be indirect as RS3 vs. 1M vs. Cayman R. The cars are still quite similar, all fast, the RS3 is the most practical, the Cayman R is the true sportscar and the 1M is just in between in all ways. The TT-RS would fit between the 1M and Cayman R. If cars can be crosshopped, then they are also rivals in some way.
