4th Place: BMW M6
Highs:
As comfortable as the road trip is long, fast when it needs to be, usable back seat.

Lows:
Two-plus tons of not-so-fun, sounds more like warp drive than internal combustion, the controls are cold.

Verdict:
The world’s quickest Thunderbird.

3rd Place: Jaguar XKR-S
Highs:
The MGM lion under the hood, shockingly fast, challenges your driving skills, a beautiful interior.

Lows:
Antiquated electronics, stiff chairs, a dorky wing, feels a little old.

Verdict:
A real animal that just needs some updating.

2nd Place: Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG
Highs:
Goes hard and handles beautifully, lots of conveniences, quietest at speed with its top up.

Lows:
Styled by people with odd tastes, price is closing in on a Bentley.

Verdict:
An exquisite fusion of luxury and sport.

1st Place: Porsche 911 Carrera S
Highs:
None is more fun, latest 911 has more frills, puts you in touch with your senses.

Lows:
Narrower seats, noisier cabin, less horsepower for the money.

Verdict:
Loses its roof but not its poise.

The SL still dominates the cars in its class, losing to a 911 because of sportiness is no bad thing IMO. The 911 Cabrio isn't the primary competition and C&D has gone back and forth on this before, putting the SL first before and now the 911. Long as the Jag and BMW were put in their place I'm good.

- yeah right. Because everyone knows the spanner monkeys at Castle Bromwich are superior to those at Bremen.

American hack has to find some way to save British-Indian blushes, against horrifying Naz, Swabian onslaught.

BMW just doesn't do large limos, coupes, and convertibles well. The 7 series is okay, but still no S Class. That's something BMW needs to work on.

the problem with the 6-Series is it's compromised by using underpinnings designed to serve the larger 7-series, as the 5/6/7 share a common platform/components set, hence the bloat of the 6er, and unsuitability to take on a 400 lb lighter 2-seat SL.

BMW's heartland is always the 3-series, with the 7-series almost like a half-hearted affair.

The new 2-series, M135i and new M3 show what BMW's engineers love above all - fast, smallish saloons/coupes with wonderful engines.

But does BMW sportscars? Neither I'd say. They have a lot to work on.

Who care about that? That is not an excuse, jus as there is no excuse for Maserati using a 15 year old E Class chassis.

Sure, the Z4 shows it very well so as the up-coming FWD Z2.

The M6 is starting to look attractive with these discounts..

They all give massive discounts - there is (or rather was, not sure if it is still there) a Panamera Turbo S for 60k off at one of the Porsche dealers here. They also have a 991 Cab S for 22k off. My co worker got 8k off on just a C350 coupe. I don't know about Jag, but I doubt it is any different.

Potentially...

Yes a 7 rating for the SL's fit and finish is ludicrous. The SL is finished and assembled superbly.

In Australia, 10% discounts on these cars is common. But what's the point in advertising 15% off prices openly. Clearly that is the asking price if that's what is being listed in print.

If true, it is probably a good indication of the economic situation back then vs now than anything else.

Maybe they docked a couple of points that stupid offset center console.

When you'e sitting snugly in the beautifully trimmed cabin, you don't even notice the offset which can be somewhat exaggerated in photos.
