Robert. Having command over a language isnt about proper grammar and the ability to place "big words" in a sentence. Its about being able to back up your argument and communicating with the people around you. Also, knowing when to use the right language with the right person is another way of demonstrating command over language. People who make an impact in this world do not speak "over" others-they speak with others.

That is all true Matt ...but I think you missed my point. You are correct, some people do use language to make themselves appear intellectually superior to others. I am talking about the general standard of spoken English among English speakers -- many English-speaking people have a very poor command over the English language -- this is a failure of the education system. It is very difficult to have an in-depth conversation with people who have poor communication skills.

The people on this forum, in general, have outstanding communication skills -- the standard of English is very high indeed -- I have encountered many English speakers whose language skills are greatly inferior to many of the members on this forum who speak English as a second language.

I think the reason that a lot of people use proper English when it's not their primary language is because English is a really easy language IMO. English is "technically" my 4th language (after Thai, French, and Polish but I forgot that one). But compared to all of those English is the most simplistic and I'm very comfortable with it.

P.S. No one mentioned Portuguese. I think that is a really good sounding language.

Yes, I love it when Italian and French girls speak English.

Also, am I the only one who wishes Angelina Jolie spoke like Lara Croft all the time -- very few English girls sound that good.
