Hot! BREAKING NEWS: BMW Officially Buys ALPINA

Personally I think this about securing the long term legacy of the brand, not the long term future of it. I think BMW and Alpina both appreciate that Alpina may seriously struggle to maintain relevance in the near future, and rather than wait for that to happen slowly and painfully, they've got ahead of it. The Alpina brand can sit either in BMW's active portfolio, or sit in it's portfolio of defunct brands with Riley, Triumph and BLMC, but from BMW's point of view, they're bringing control of the legacy into their own hands.

I hope they choose to do something really interesting with it. But I'm not betting on it.

One can only hope Alpina is not ending up like AMG. Nothing more than a badge, a few spoilers and a over tweaked 4 cylinder engine and in future an electric engine.
I for one have difficulties in stomaching a, let’s say 1er with Alpina badges, wheels, the full monty and then noticing it has a normal BMW 3 cylinder engine. Just the way MB ridiculed AMG with an AMG-line A class.

Unless… it’s going to be a more refined, noticable more luxurious and noticable better materials used for the interior car, only for the 5er upwards. That ignites my enthusiasm! Imagine a 7er in Alpina disguise, a bit less sporty than currently, a bit more luxury and opulence, a better car than the standard 7er. Wouldn’t mind at all paying extra money for it, not at all.

BMW already do that with the Msport Models.

This is BMW buying Alpina to shut them down.

The relevant points from the official release indicate the following timeline:

  • Alpina continues largely as is until 2025, at which point, the current vehicle programme is stopped.
  • The site at Buchloe will be operated by BMW as a development centre. I suspect the family have agreed a long term lease for the site, since BMW have not taken ownership of such assets. Since there's no share transfer I'd imagine BMW will list it as a joint operation, participation or non consolidated company.
  • Buchloe will continue to be a site for legacy support of existing models.
  • Employees that won't be required at Buchloe will be offered other jobs within BMW before 2025.
  • The wine business is clearly not affected.
  • There is no mention of BMW's long term plans for the brand.

It's BMW buying Alpina to ensure they have control over it's legacy. Both BMW and the Bovensiepens know the writing is on the wall for the company in the coming era, if BMW wanted them out of play, they just don't renew the cooperation agreement, stop production of Alpinas on their own production lines, and let Alpina fail for free. Neither the family nor BMW want a situation where Alpina goes to a third party, so this is the only logical outcome. BMW get effective control and the family keep their investment.

The future will bring either no Alpinas, Alpina models equivalent to what we see now, but within the new class range, or, Alpinas totally unlike those we see now.

ALPINAs' future lies in the focus on electrification and an emphasis on modern, sustainable luxury paired with high standards of performance and efficiency. BMW AG appears to envision ALPINA as a future sub-brand positioned between BMW and Rolls-Royce.

In attempting to read the tea leaves, I suspect that ALPINA offerings as of 2026 will be far more than "enobled" BMWs'.

If they go bespoke?
Would an Alpina BMW Conflict with a BMW M bespoke concept? Alpina don’t sell certain models in the US because of potential conflict with the M models. That’s a stipulation under BMW.

As far as I understood the site will remain in the hands of the family but instead the Alpina name they will use the Bevensiepen name for the company.

I'm imagining that future (electric) BMW M offerings will not tread on the toes of future electric ALPINA sub-brand automobiles. For example, BMW M division cars may be explicitly top-performance BMW model derivatives (future Neue Klasse toolkit-based 3, 5 and 7 series) featuring perhaps 3 very compact, very powerful e-motors producing system outputs in the vicinity of 650-700kW. A sole genuinely bespoke M division product could conceivably be some sort of 2 seat electric hypercar inspired by the likes of the Rimac Nevera or Lotus Evija.

ALPINA sub-brand automobiles could appeal to a demographic that appreciates larger very refined, very elegant yet rapid automobiles. Hence an electric ALPINA specific luxury 4 door GT. An ALPINA-specific larger sport/luxury, somewhat elevated ride height electric sport activity crossover could complement it. Perhaps even some form of ALPINA-branded electric spiritual successor to the BMW Z8 could prove to be an interesting endeavor.

Just guessing, mind you.

Right time, according to the profit figures never seen before due to the strategy of more up class cars 7, 8, XM, Rolls Royce etc, Alpina falls like a glove if they pay attention to our recommendations

Things like that

14 euros.
Reference to?....

The wine business is clearly not affected.
Except for the 200 bottles that were drunk celebrating the deal...

BMW AG appears to envision ALPINA as a future sub-brand positioned between BMW and Rolls-Royce.
Now with the great reputation of Alpina......

Always cool

It will be interesting to how it all fits.
You have the luxury class with THE 7,X7,8,B7,XB7,M8 and now the XM that all segues into the Rolls-Royce Ghost. The only thing missing is a smaller SUV for RR under the Cullinan or a BMW M branded Sports Car.
Alpina opens up Bespoke possibilities but will there be room to manoeuvre?

Between the $150,000 for the top-of-the-range 7-series and the $250,000 starting Ghost, I think there's enough room to compete with Bentley and Maybach

They also have these (all LWB's and selling them worldwide with the "new" treatment (which will perhaps be even more noticeable and luxurious than today's Alpinas), the Chinese would love it. (I would not rule out some own and unique model designed specifically).
