Spy photos reveal new details on the 2017 BMW M5
BMW M5, Rumors | August 1st, 2016
Thanks to new spy photos of the 2017 BMW M5, we now have an updated rendering showing the alleged front-end design of the next M5
Thanks to new spy photos of the 2017 BMW M5, we now have an updated rendering showing the alleged front-end design of the next M5. The folks over atMotor.es have peeled off the camo wrap from the M5 test mules spotted in Spain and revealed design cues in line with the latest BMW M products. Specifically, with the BMW M2 Coupe. The front fascia sports the iconic kidney grille with the chrome outer edge meeting the end of the sleek headlights. On the lower part of the front-end, a set of large air intakes house similar aero blades as those on the M2 Coupe.
The new M5 is built under the codename F90 and over the last few months we have seen several prototypes testing on public roads and at the Nurburgring. Just like the G30 5 Series, the F90 M5 has received the harsh treatment of weight loss, thanks to the inclusion of exotic materials such as high strength steels or carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP).
The current M5 F10 was already close to two tons weight, so the weight savings in this new generation are crucial for the driving dynamics of the new M5. According to our sources, the weight scale will indicate around 100 kilograms less than the current F10 M5.
THE ENGINE
If everything goes as planned, the new 2017 BMW M5 will be powered by the same 4.4 liter V8 TwinTurbo used by the current M5. However, BMW engineers have worked hard to evolve and optimize the M engine. Therefore, the new F90 M5 will use the same base architecture of the current V8, but with a twist. The updated unit has been optimized to deliver maximum power at a wider rpm range, yet the power won’t exceed by much the 600 hp mark. Sources say a 620 hp figure is definitely achievable, but won’t confirm the final power output. Currently, the M5’s rivals are in the range of 550 to 605 hp.
ALL-WHEEL DRIVE FOR THE FIRST TIME
The F90 M5 will also bring the long-time rumored all-wheel drive system to an M5 and future M6 models. The xDrive system will be rear-biased, just like the one in the X5 M and X6 M SUVs, and it will be optional. The xDrive system has been developed specifically for the M5, with a specific task to retain the driving dynamics of a rear-wheel drive sportscar, with the bonus of having an effective grip and traction on all four wheels.
The standard transmission is likely to be the same M-dual-clutch transmission as the current F10 M5. Sources say this new M5 might still offer the manual gearbox for the American market.
LAUNCH DATE
When will it be presented? If we consider that the new BMW 5 Series will be presented early next year, we expect the new BMW M5 to debut in the second half of 2017.

Thats what im talking about boss
Thats what im talking about boss
Guys can u see what im seeing in the roof..i think its the carbon viper design like the m4 and m3 and m6 or im wrong?
Thats why they are hidding it with the camo
And see the previous pic are not camo in the roof.
A carbon roof would be a first for the M5. I like the idea. And Ali might even be right, the shape of that roof reminds me of the M4 or M6.
OMG That is amazing guysHe is right. I seen one today. It makes sense that underneath the Carbon roof panel the rib-structure like the M3/M4 and the 7er is CFRP. No Sunroof however if you go CFRP?
And next time show what ever u see scott![]()
I would have been amazed if the F90 M5 didn't have a CFRP roof. The F80 M3 has one after all.
Yes but a Carbon roof has been with the M3 in some form or another for many years, while no M5 ever had one..
25 Jahre M5 "CSL" had a Carbon Fibre roof... just a shame they never sold it!
