M5 BMW M5 F10 - Test Drives/Reviews

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M
My daughter would garrote me with her hairband if I ever put her behind me in a GTR (I'm 6'1" and she's 8) and I've never made friends with any midgets - don't know why I guess we just never saw eye to eye.

Let her sit in front then :)

I'm 184cm. and my tallest girlfriend ever was 178cm. and she was always seating in front in all my cars.
My friends are the same height as me or slightly taller but my legs are really long and my seat is always a problem for the guy behind me even in my 5er in some cases.

I always tell the taller ones to sit in front or behind the passenger seat cos it's always pulled more forward than mine. It wasn't a problem in the GTR with 2 of my friends on the back and my GF in front. I test drove the M5 in the same configuration - it was perfect in both cases.

At the end you get good comfort and space in a track ready monster that does 0-100 in 3 seconds. A car FAR more thrilling than the M5 :usa7uh:

Seriously mini_cooper4 , GTR is not a M5 in terms of comfort, space and ride, neither in the rear or trunk space. And those rearseats in 5-series is far more comfy than the backseat in a GTR. Trust me on this, I've been in the backseat of a GTR but I would never sit there during a longer trip. Not to mention getting in and out of the GTR is far more difficult and takes longer time. GTR is no replacement for M5 if you want space, comfort and luxury.
Now you probably going to say that your Lambo fits 4 adults ;)

Let me put it this way :)

I don't see the M5 as a wise buy. In my opinion you buy a 555HP car if you're willing to take it on track and drive it as it's meant to be driven. On the streets you need nothing else but a 520d. I know that you can have fun even without breaking the speed limit on mountain roads and so on... BUT in this case my fellow friends on the back seat felt more comfortable in the GTR than in the M5 ;) Hitting their heads in the M5 wasn't exactly fun for them :D

If you are considering a 4 door saloon (regardless of its performance) it speaks volumes that you need rear space, Martin's pictures confirm that the GTR's rear space is little better than a Carrera, 6er or any other so-called 2+2 which basically means no room behind the driver and uncomfortable foot room for both front passenger and the person behind them.

I'm also surprised that people here feel that if you want comfort than you shouldn't be considering an M5 in the first place..... hello am I hearing this right, the new M5 has been highly praised for its comfortable ride, in fact I'm sure it's been compared to cars of a class above on some road tests. The GTR is rock hard, that might be considered acceptable for that class of car but not comparable with an M5.

I'm shocked that I'm the only one questioning this comparison as absurd.

i love steve, but this idea and test is absolutely bonkers. I really dont think it helped that reader a bit.

Big friends in a back seat of a GTR being more comfortable in an M5. Fishiest damn story I've read all day.

[Hangs head in utter bemusement]

Well that's a personal opinion you are making now and whilst I do agree that a 520d does everything the M5 will do if you stick to the rules of the road but the same argument can be made for a TTtdi against your Gallardo but you chose to drive your car because you can afford it and like how it drives.

This debate is whether the GTR and M5 share enough in common to be considered rivals which I most definitely don't think is the case.

During a fun drive, Martin, what seats will make your passengers feel more comfortable ?
Do a drift with the M5 and just take a look in the mirror to see what happens with the guys on the bench :usa7uh:
The M5 and GTR are performance machines and if you're willing to drive both normally they are BOTH the wrong choice...
About my Lambo... the GTR is like a magic carpet compared to it and that's why I have the 520d ;)

A-ha - there dear readers is the answer! The Nissan GT-R is more comfortable than an M5 in the back because your friends will be squished in so tight they can't move during hard cornering.

Tight enough :usa7uh:
I'm just saying that on a fun drive with friends it's better to take the GTR as it will be more "comfortable" in this case. None of these cars can be comfortable during a ride of this type but in the end those cars are made for this type of driving. If you want to take a long trip the M5 will be perfect if you don't break the road rules but it will take the same time from A to B like the 520d it only will cost twice as much to fuel the car...
So if you're buying a performer it better be the GTR.

wtf?

May be Enzo vs. M5 F10?)

And it looks so stunning in white, but I worry about actually trying to drive it fast in that color. Seems like you'd be just asking for trouble.

I thought the GTR was heavier than that but the difference is smashing 211 kg. Thats a lot!

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
