M5 BMW M5 F10 (spy pics & info)

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M
As to the redline, I first thought I saw a 7,200 redline in this picture:

The other shot appeared to be too blurry to see anything, but I had another look, and voila:

You can see the yellow revv range starting at around 6,750 and going up to 7,100 rpm where the red zone starts. So, I'd now say redline is at 7,100 rpm.

Thanks South. Here is the X5M for ref. The yellow region now seems to start at 6750 vs 6500 in X5M and the red line seems to be around 7100/7200 vs 7000 in X5M. Not that I think it will make a big difference.

I'm afraid I'm lost now. When you talk about the digital speedo, are you talking about the function to toggle various items for display between the speedo and tachograph? What difference does it make if you have 6MT or M DCT?
Yes, exactly. With 6MT, these items are shown on the lower, bigger part of the display. With M DCT, the lower part shows the current gear, thus the other functions had to be moved to the smaller area above.

I'm curious as to whether the redline actually means 7100rpm or if it's actually a little higher than that, like is the case with the M3. Not that it actually matters given all the torque this thing will have at it's disposal.

On a different note, any word of what type of diff the M5 will be using, i.e. whether it's a modified form of M-diff or more like an e-diff in the 458.

Rumors....it is not getting the X5M/X6M engine...its similar, but puts out over 600hp.

Which is exactly what I have said from the beginning.
It is based on that engine although the engineers have worked to progress it for the M5, it is not a simple transplant, The engine has been reworked to suit the car.

But the outcome for both M5 and M6 will be very different from the X-M's.

I must admit that I too forgot about the head up display. But is it known yet if this will be standard, otherwise that big central digital speedo reading might be needed.

It should be standard, it already was on the E60 M5....

But the outcome for both M5 and M6 will be very different from the X-M's.

And I also hope the output between M5 and M6 will be different, with the M6 having more power than M5!

Why? if they have the same engine, they should make the same power. I hate it when they play these stupid marketing games. Anyway, M5 was the first in class to make 400HP and 500HP, so 600HP seems befitting.

Looks like a pretty developed car to me. It even has the M badge on the instrument dials, in which case they obviously haven't just raided the parts bin.

After further look, you're right. Thanks for the correction. ;)

I'm pretty sure that's the real deal, mainly because the Alpina B5 uses the same full black panel instrument cluster. I have to admit, that's a pleasant change over the regular 5-series models, and another reason to consider the M5, albeit a small one (yes, I'm crazy about such things).

Nah....If you're paying that much money, you can never be crazy about the lil details like that. It's lil details like that I love about things. Everyone can see all the other stuff, but it's usually the owners/enthusiasts who notice and appreciate the smaller/finer details.

Oh right. That's clear now. But you can still see the digital speedo even with M DCT.

So the M5 is little below 600hp and M6 is over 600hp. :usa7uh:;)

This might be a silly question.... except for the Scorpions on the X5/X6, has BMW ever used Pirelli's before? I've always thought they went with Continentals when it came to the M's.

M5 E60 was delivered with Continental. I think BMW puts on the best tyres thats suits the character of a certain M.

Traditionally I think most M cars ran Michelins but I think you are now seeing different brands being offered. Ever increasingly car manufacturers are testing multiple brands and getting these brands to develop tyres to suit there needs, not just a single supplier. This is the way VAG do it, to broker the best deal on an on going basis and I am sure BMW will follow suit, if they already haven't

Marketing?? No, real world performance difference. The M6 costs way more than an M5. It's good for it to have more sheer power, and of course not just on paper. It should be a few tenths of a second faster in every sprint.

You sound like a MB fanatic back in the days when power meant everything ;)
Better to shave some weight, afterall its a sporty Coupé.

Why would they make the M6 more powerful than the M5. It's the M6 in many people's eye just a coupe version of the 4dr M5?

Like Just_Me said, better to reduce weight which would not only improve it's outright acceleration but also benefit the handling to boot.

This will be the case, M6 will be lighter than M5, and this is better than more power.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
