BMW M Wants Project One Rival; Needs Upper Management Approval

I believe BMW's management does not have the balls to go after a supercar. Time after time they have passed on several chances, even when the competition has done it.

BMW should have launched a R9 competitor back in the day IMO.

You mean R8?
The advantage of Audi was platform sharing with Lambo.
That helped to lower costs...

Maybe BMW should join forces with Toyota? They accomplished Z4/Supra ... just for cost reasons...
The LFA wasn't a great success in my books ... so co-develop a supercar platform with Toyota maybe?

If that happens, which I doubt it will, but if it happens, let BMW take command, because if that 10 year span for developing and honing the LFA is any indication....

I do not see this wonderful CGI posted anywhere before, but it's a very good step forward for an 600 - 700 plus HP i8 or i10 maybe, something to compete in the supercar major league

The LFA took forever because Toyota scrapped the design and restarted a couple of times.

The last thing actual BMW customers need is a BMW supercar.

Martin, we all know that ;)
For a mass producer the only reason for a supercar is the HALO effect it generates... underlining the sportiness of the entire brand.
So - the interessting question then is: Where does it make most sense to invest one or more billions for the manufacturer?

HALO car (generating some net loss)
Investing more money in the bread and butter products, to make them all the sportiest of its class
Invest all the money in marketing initiatives

All have its pros and cons...
The first generates statements like yours
The second is hard to achieve and will instantly reveal, that people only adore sportiness on paper ... if the cars really get sportier, it is almost ineviteable, that they loose some comfort... and people citing Nürburgring Nordschleife times constantly then all of a sudden don't like the sportiness that much :)
The third one is the most laziest one ... without any substance... so, we should choose between the first two...

A perfect example of what @manuelf says is at this Christmas time, the best-selling toys in the city where I live are transformers of Lambo Aventador and BMW i8 by hundreds and hundreds, the lucky children who receive them will know the brand , and thanks to that, some will become fanatical, just like us when we were children, with our posters on the wall, Hot wheels, Matchbox, etc., with such a simple detail (the transformers are Chinese toys) generate future aspirants to buy that same vehicle icon, or one of the same brand, since historically Halo cars drag and possess the entire line of that brand.

It is investing in the future.
That contact with consumers is priceless
By the way I did not see any transformer of the 2 series tourer ......... that's weird

Rumour mill .... the first stand alone M car will be ... the X8M. I $hit you not! :wideyed:

An antithesis to iNext.

Any initial info about the type of propulsion?

I can only guess. But I would bet on the same one as seen in M8 (or even M8 Competition or CS/L). AWD is a safe bet, obviously.

But there's also quite some hint of X7 / X8 M60i development activities.
I guess BMW will go full-throtle with V12 before ditching it completely. So, a V12 engine in X7 M60i, X8 M60i, even 8er M60i woudn't strike me as a surprise.

Exactly!! Current BMW-M boss even gave a subtle hint at this when @bmwblog interviewed him about 2 months ago & he said concerning a stand-alone M car that “they were going in a different direction”.

Sporty-luxury SAVs / SACs are a hot stuff right now. I guess with stand-alone X8M BMW would go directly after Lamborghini, Ferrari and Aston Martin in this segment.

I'm a bit puzzled by the rumour X7 4-seater development has been stalled / stopped though. o_O
Why the hesitation? Has BMW realised they have no chance against GLS Maybach & RangeRover Autobiography & Bentley Bentayga? Have they assessed they have perhaps better chance with a sporty luxury 4-seater SAC instead with ultra-luxury 4-seater SAV? Or are they planning to offer iNext as ultry-luxury SAV in this segment (instead of X7)? I wouldn't be surprised when iNext is offered as luxury 4-seater model instead of X7. Image wise that would be a sound(er) choice / decision too.

Hahahahha they went from Hyper car to a suv.... man only bmw can disappoint like this..

You have to respect the fans though, they hanging in there!

It's the state of the market. A hyper SAV although it may not seem like it, may be the preferred choice. Wait till the GLS-Maybach and 63 AMG launch. Markets will go crazy for them.

yeah its not always about money... this is why people don't like bmw...

and folks go pretty ape shit over hypercars to.. most are sold out and there is a shitload more buzz around a AMG ONE than a GLS maybach ile tell you that.
