3 Series (G20) BMW G20 3 Series LCI - First Official Pics!

The BMW G20 is the seventh generation of the BMW 3 Series range. Body styles: G20 (sedan), G21 (wagon/touring), G28 BEV (i3), and G28 (long-wheelbase). Predecessor: F30 3 Series. Successor: G50 3 Series. Production: October 2018-2016.
The G50 and G51 based on the CLAR Platform.
Are they switching to two different concept strategies in the same segment that Mercedes is currently implementing? (example E class- EQE ) Why are they now advertising BEV-ICE options on the same platform? (X3,5 and 7 series) It's a big contradiction.

Last week I drove the G20 M340i for the first time. IMO it’s the sweet spot BMW that nails its brief very well.

F-Series bimmers were great but flawed cars. Regardless of which one I drove I could within 20min make a list of fixes that need done whether it’s ditching run flats, changing the suspension, upgrading anti roll bars or fitting an LSD. The G20 whoever feels perfect out of the factory. Roll away and it is as quiet and executive as a G30 5-Series. Double glazing and big sports seats makes the cabin a lovely place to be.

Ride quality is appropriately dynamic. In the country side the suspension does a good job of rolling with the undulations and bumps rather than beating against them. The suspension is compliant but her body roll is very controlled when taking the third exit in a roundabout.

B58 + AWD is a a lovely combo making the car possible to exploit all year around. A brilliant car for a one car garage. However it is not a substitute for a G82 which is very different to drive.

I like almost everything about this lci except the silly screen.
The redesigned 792 M Alloy Wheels with Bicolour/Jet Black on the M340i and M340d facelift are now the best looking rims on the current G20’s configuration. They surpassed the 791 M rims in terms of look and visual.

Cleanest LCI ever. Looks superb bevquse just like M-cars, it doesn't have fog lights.

Looks ok, even though the prefacelifted headlights from regular 3er were way better.

The plastic airintakes are an eyesore, it looks so cracking cheap. Reminds me of 5€ Vacuum filters from Amazon. They should stop it.

Make bars great again!

I mourn the abolishment of the gear selector lever. A quick swipe on it with my hand I can engage sport mode to make the car feel more urgent when entering a roundabout or to dis-engage start-and-stop. It's so easy and natural that I don't have to take my eyes off the road or look down to see which button I'm pressing. This won't be an issue for LCI M3/M4 because they have M1 and M2 buttons on the wheel.

Don't get me started. For me it's a massive diminishment in practical usability and driver appeal. But hey, why listen to a raving lunatic who happens to only have owned the last 3 BMW 3 Series models. Those who worship at the alter of any brand have far more important opinions to convey over actual owners - didn't you know?

Anyhow, for your and my inconsequential discussion... it's not only about being able to select gears yourself (which is vital in a BMW imo), there's also a very useful feature you get with the gear lever. I've used Stop/Start in all my 3ers as I believe there's absolutely no reason to idle a car at an intersection when stopped for longer than 5 seconds.
However, since F30 LCI, the auto engine stop is aggressive to the point of being unsafe. The wheels haven't even come to a dead stop and Stop/Start comes in.
It's a problem especially in feeder lanes where you yield to oncoming traffic and then have to gap it. The lag between the engine stopping and restarting creates enough of a delay that, where you could cross oncoming traffic safely, you're now languishing as everything wakes up and gets going again.

Just a simple tap of the gear lever to left puts the 'box in sport mode and disables the Stop/Start. It's so ergonomically intuitive and simple - I use it all the time and it makes for safer vehicle reactions.

So now, what's BMW's answer to this requirement? Look down, fiddle for the Sport button or Auto Stop Start button or just drive the car in Sport Mode all the time and negate the point of Stop/Start and the more frugal driving modes. Or maybe "Hey BMW, I'm approaching a busy feeder lane and I need you to disable Stop/Start pretty please". F#ck off.

Well at least you got a big fat curved display to look at.

I said this months ago. ;)

Sat in an LCI M340i the other day and played around quite a bit with the UI and new controls. It's shite - an absolute backward step in terms of usability.
Frikken have to swipe the screen to get to HVAC settings just to hit the recirculate button which I do on a regular basis because I don't want to smell some old piece of junk's fumes or the smoke from a winter's "veld" fire.
Gear toggle is an insult - just like it is in a regular 911. Levers are ergomically superior - that's why GTx cars get 'em.
Even the curved screen can't help but come across as low rent compared to the far prettier layout of the pre-LCI. Hugely disappointed and there's nothing I can do about it except suck it up and learn to live with it.

Edit - oh, and the display graphics for revs and speed make me want to puke. < >

Thats odd because the i4 still has one.

The M3's interior is already in LCI format. The gear level remains

I'm so so glad my M4 has the 'old' set up.

And it’s solid. The most solid-feeling 3 Series interior ever. No snap crackle pop this time.;)

I haven't yet experienced it in the summer heat as I just arrived from the UK to an unseasonable cold snap, but impressions so far are 'solid'.
