3 Series (E90) BMW E90/91 3-Series Facelift Thread

The BMW E90 is the fifth generation of the BMW 3 Series range. Body styles: E90 (saloon), E91 (estate/touring), E92 (coupé) and E93 (convertible). Predecessor: BMW E46. Successors: F30/F31 3 Series, and F32/F33 4 Series. Production: 2004-2013.
the mini engine has very good characteristics
as far as i know, that x20i engine has a supporting compressor and a turbo to reach the 170ps, but isn't as agile - so why fix something, when you already have a proven engine

Are you talking about the engine in BMW 120i?
I have that engine and there is no compressor or Turbo in my car :t-hands:

Poor guy!

Just kidding, Andreas :D

I think Jack took BMW's x20i for Volkswagen's 1.4 TSI Twincharger?

believe me, i know some technical features of that engine, both are very small components
the engine couldn't make the 170ps without the two helpers - its derivated from the 116i

jack, help me here, are you talking about the engine in my facelifted BMW 120i?

There is actually a sound when you hit full throttle with my car that remind me about a supercharger, it has that special sound from a supercharger.

116i >> N43B16
118i (FL) / 318i + 120i (FL) / 320i >> N43B20 M1 + O1 (120i: 210 Nm @ 4.250 rpm)

No charger but 2nd generation direct injection.

Hope >> this << link works. According to the article, you have the 'performante' version of the N43B20, Andreas. Heck, babelfish translations are too cool sometimes ... :D

There indeed is no turbocharger nor a compressor of any kind on the 120i's I4 engine. It's NA, apart from the x35i and the new TTV8 there are no supercharged BMW petrol engines up to now.
But indeed let's hope for some more great engines to come...:t-cheers:

i had a longer discussion(several years ago - pre 1series release) about the engine 120(d or i - can't remember) - and that guy definitly knew what he is talking about, and he said that "they" are achieving the 170hp with a small supercharger and a turbo

i drove a 118i prototype - without the charger
and a 120d - with the charger
and sometimes you really hear it

Let me guess - sometimes you are in Steyr? ;)

Ok, a diesel-specific update of the overview:

116i >> N43B16 (no turbo)
118i >> N43B20M (no turbo)
118i >> N43B20O1 (no turbo)
118d >> N47D20U0 (single turbo)
120d >> N47D20O0 (single turbo)
123d >> N47D20T0 (twin turbo (can someone translate Registerturboaufladung?))

Same for the 3er (except N43B16 which is not available for the E9x lineup).

no, i have nothing to do with steyr - or with the car industry (at the moment)
you just need good friends :D

but maybe i'll see my friend again, and maybe he will shed some light onto the dark - i can't find any serious engine data on the net

No need for light in the dark, everything is perfectly clear.
The I4 diesel engines either have one (118d/120d) or two (123d) turbos,
I4 gasoline engines are all NA period; 116i, 118i, 120i

btw, I just read this on another forum:

Just got the news this morning from the dealer that we can now order a 335i with 7 speed DCT. It's half the price of the M-DCT on the M3. First cars will arrive in Australia in Sept (which means production would have started already). Are any other model going to be available in the DCT soon? 135i maybe?

Is this really true? I was under the impression that the DCT was exclusively for the M3?

I am sure there will be a less aggressive non-M version. BMW did the same with SMG.

The current generation E90 BMW 3-series has been on the market with only minor updates since 2005, and is due for a facelift for the 2009 model year. The updates include a sportier look for all models, and in the case of the new 335i wagon, a sportier engine in the form of the twin-turbocharged six-cylinder shared throughout BMW’s lineup.

New front and rear fascias, a new grille, redesigned air intakes and brake ducts, updated fog lights and a new, more flowing hood design are the primary visual changes. A new set of tail lights at the rear may bring back the notched appearance of previous 3-series cars.

Mechanically, the updates are yet largely unknown, but expect some minor improvements to emissions figures to meet the challenging new standards being enacted in both the EU and the U.S. Whether the pollution control improvements will affect horsepower is unknown, though it always remains a possibility.

The expected addition of the 335i badge and twin-turbocharged 3.0L engine option to the 3-series wagon fills a bit of a gap in BMW’s expansive product lineup, since it is the only body style not offered with the high-performance M3 package.

Changes for the facelift will be for the most part minor, but the next-generation 3-series is expected to bring some dramatic new additions to the range. A possible ’shooting brake‘ type three-door wagon could be added, and a recent 3-series design concept could show the future influences of the car’s styling direction, though it is an unofficial freelance interpretation.
