R&T: BMW F30 vs E90

Progress is often a compromise. In the case of the BMW 3-series, that compromise is between the "sport" and "sedan" sides of the car's personality: quick reflexes and driver feedback versus comfort, speed, and isolation. While it's no secret that the Three is an industry standard—most carmakers willingly admit to using it as the sport-sedan benchmark—the gap between BMW and its competition has never been smaller.

So why are we looking at two BMWs? Because their differences are telling. First, the nameplate that everyone once loved is still amazing but no longer as universally adored, and a lot of people are wondering why. Second, if you examine where the 3-series is going, you learn something about the industry that follows it.

The E90 steering tells you what is about to happen, and the F30 steering tells you what just happened.

Very well written article. It simply echoes exactly what I have been thinking since BMW went turbo with its cars.

Oh, here we are talking about my all time favorite car - The E90.
There isn't anything better than it... ahh the E92 looks better but also has 2 doors less.
I totally agree with that review! The first time I drove the F30 last year I had the chance to test the 18d and 28i engines.
My conclusion was that the car is nearly a perfect all-rounder but it doesn't shine in any particular area. The steering isn't anything special too... in fact it's not 3-Series worthy. They think the new one is prettier... to me it's far worse. Now that they prove that even the MPG figure isn't much better I really don't see a reason to go with this chassis this time around... yet I was so close to getting the 4er from launch.

PS: The F30 is most probably one of the best cars ever... It's far from being a true 3-Series tho
PS2: I used to lick my E90 and spanked her ass too

At least my brother in law still has a glorious facelift Alpine white M pack E90....a true joy to drive.

And yet, the E92 M3 has amongst the glassiest steering feel in its class. Odd.
