If certain people will be wanting to buy an M car that sits below the M3 and is not powered by a punny little 4 cylinder engine, then they will probably buy whatever the company will bother offering them so, no, the book example for the einer m and the z m is kind of off mark, because it does not take into account the necessary compromise.

Even if they pitty us as much so as to offer an M version of both, people might consider both.

Is this the special edition of the e82 or is it something else that will run in parallel?

That argument with the marketeers and the use of the M1 badge is utter bullshit. The majority of the potential buyers will probably have not even heard of the original M1

I on the other hand don't agree. The M1 was the first of a kind, a super car that hasn't met it's equal (by bmw I mean). 1 series therefor can never be called M1 it jusn't wouldn't fit. fi the McLaren F1 if that would have been built completely by BMW it could have been called M1, a worthy sequal to the original. M135i or 135tii, that would be nice, cause it refers to the 1 series predecessor the 2002. I know M devision didn't exist back then but nevertheless M1 is no can do for me. But of course it is up to the marketing dept to decide. Anyway no matter how it is called if they make the 135 somewhat more powerfull and about 250kg lighter we have a winner :usa7uh:

It has not only to deal with marketing, but IMO also with tradition
BMW is very keen on their History an Tradition, too much to dilute that in an short lived M E82!

^ And then the new M1, and then again, and again... :) Just like the M3 or M5. They better change the name of the original M1 into something else ;)

The 1 series is a car that will be around as a segment for many years to come, and the M1 monicker belongs to a 1 series, not a thirty something year old antique sportscar.

Tradition is built when you venture out and give a shot to the bespoke, the extraordinary. I dont give a flying **** about how they call the specific car, or any other (sports) car they built.

It just shows that the people that take decisions are confined from various phobic syndroms that make their life harder, possibly ours too.

There's two dilemmas here strictly from a naming point of view.

1 - Yes, it's bullshit that there can't be a modern M1 based purely on some kind of historical technicality. Problem is, brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz thrive on venerating the past with cult-like fervor. Witness the latest E-Coupe commercial where the heritage of Mercedes is shamelessly flaunted for all it's worth.

2 - The people that should be interested in a new M1 are the exact same people who would know about the original M1 and would be properly offended that such a storied nameplate would be cheaply donated to such an "ordinary" car.

gxanthop - I think you're viewing this the wrong way. A new M1 shouldn't be intended the people interested in what's "below" an M3 - The new M1 would be for people who want something more agile and less encumbered by luxo-bloat than the M3. It would be for the aficionados who pine for the lightweight, raw M3s of yore, and would be willing to pay a serious premium to drive a modern-day equivalent.

The 135 already offers an intense drive and a pretty stiff cost-to-content proposition. If M was to give the 1er a proper treatment the result would be for serious drivers only, and I think BMW has the right constituency to make that happen.

I think it makes perfect sense if BMW wants to name this car 135tii - with an accompanying "M" badge on the car's ass to pay off the curb appeal. Some people will be confused, but those some people are - by and large - not the people for this car.

^ Nah, only a few will know why it isn't simply called M1. People who still remember the original M1 are grandpa and grandma, and they are driving a Toyota IQ or Citroen C2 if they are still able to drive...

Right now for the modern human being, M1, M3, M5 and M6 should be the M line-up for the regular cars...

And the M10 will be the new M1 , M1+0 :D

I believe it won't be called M1. If they didn't want to remind the world the existence of the old M1, they wouldn't have made that M1 concept a while ago.

What's a M1 ?

Best regards,

Is that just an exhaust job, or did someone really cram the S65 in there?

Or for "M135" like the original "M535" back from 1979
