I doubt if I would I put it in the same category as a "Skunkworks" project- sorry, just can't.

I agree.... it's not quite up there with the likes of the SR-71 as a Skunkworks project. :D

Different cars, develop each to their fullest, no need to apply the breaks.

But a fully-fledged 1M Coupe would outdo an M3 in every aspect of performance (may not top-speed, but that's not overly important). If BMW did go all-out on the 1M Coupe, what could they possibly do to make the next M3 a superior performer? Give it 555hp and all-CF body panels? There's no feasible way that an M3 would still be considered the best performance car in the BMW/M line-up if the 1M Coupe was developed to its fullest.

So BMW/M had to decide between developing the 1M Coupe to its fullest and hence surpassing the M3's performance credentials... or reign-in the 1M Coupe's potential and make it as good as an M3, just in a smaller more affordable package. If anything, the true problem for BMW/M is not that the 1M Coupe's potential has to be held back, but rather that they developed the 135i to its FULL potential. ... which then leads to me thinking that the 1M Coupe was an after-thought of the product planning process, and therefore certain compromises were inevitable.

IMO of course. :)

While Skunk Works specifically means Lockheed's Advanced Development Group and is even trademarked by Lockheed, skunkworks projects has become loosely defined term that refers to any project that is done in a sort of unofficial/secretive way. Having said that I think I doubt there was anything unofficial/secetive about the 1M development. The original Z3 M coupe on the other hand qualifies.

^ That sound you just heard was Z4 M coupe taking a dump on all that wasted bandwidth. :D.

Ha! The Z4 M. The forgotten hunchback child. It's worth mentioning though as is has it's dedicated fans in the enthusiast community. I've seen countless of Z4 M coupes with Nurburgring stickers on the butt.

Then take the 911 to a higher level of performance or position it for what it is, it will still be one of the most desirable sports cars on the planet, even if the Cayman is a sharper instrument.

Regardless of how much the output of a 911 is increased, the Cayman will be kept at arms length although it's exquisite chassi is capable of handling similar outputs to the 911.

In BMW's case, the 1M won't get the engine it truly deserves. Either way, there's a rational justification for the specs of the car in the interest of costs and affordability. Besides that, the jury is still out there as the car has yet to be put to a proper test.

Skunkworks is "trademarked" for originality; radical designs, concept, pushing the engineering envelope etc.

Now the original Z3-M..:usa7uh:

Do I see a 7500 rpm redline? :t-hands:

Our car prices in my country are made out of how high the Co2 is. So i rather see a 1M to go as low as possible on co2 and put on ecu upgrade afterwards.

Best is to go 340 a 350hp with a very restricted exhaust (cats) very low co2 and offer performance M package something like a new performance M exhaust and ecu upgrade after registration and go to 380hp easy.

Of course i rather have a high rev ///M engine but i lost faith in that.

The dashed red lines will probably start at 6800 rpm with a maximum rev-limit of around 7400 rpm.

What 'we' see: where the line makes what appears to be a very clear 'cut' @ 7500 rpm. Thus a 7500 rpm limit:t-hands:

EDIT: I think Martin is spot-on in his assumption;)

I don't mean say that the actual fuel cutoff will be at 7k, but the visual redline most certainly is at 7k.

Best regards,
south

South, you know very well that picture might change when the car is production ready. ;)

Absolutely no way.

But it ain't gonna look like that. It's going to have the eyebrows added into the headlight housing..which from the photos we've seen in the other 1er thread doesn't exactly enhance the visual expression of the 1er's face.

We'll see about that. The facelifted headlights looked great on the chop.

Also, you know anything we don't? Because the M3 and 3er coupe both have different headlights, and it might very well be that it's like this on M1 too. Meaning old headlights for the M1, and the new ones for the regular 1er coupe...

Well, it's not that I was made privy to information that others weren't, but rather that I just have a slightly better memory on some of the info SCOTT recently mentioned about the 1M. Here's a quote from a post he made on page 42 of this thread:

The headlight is disguised because it shows the upcoming refresh or in BMW-speak "Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) that will apply to all 2011 BMW 1er Coupe and Cabrio models as well as the 1M Coupe.
