i looked for a bmw e34 520i in the last 2 years.
finally i have found a 1992 no vanos 520i in black with 160.000 kms on the clock.
the request is 1450 euros.
so, i am not an expert of that car although i love, anyone can help me to avoid a wreck?
thank you in advance.

First of all, go for a 525i 24v M50 engine, much nicer with same economy.

Secondly,

Check for a smooth idle, if the car doesn't have it walk away. (was more of a problem on M30, but the M50 does suffer from it occasionally)
Steering play
worn bushes
Car shaking between 85-120 km/h (often a bad hardy disc)
Rust
I believe the M50 also featured a viscous system for starting the fan, when engine temperature rises. A very common failing item, so let the car idle and check fan starts before engine gets too hot.
collapsed catalytic converters.

wednesday i am going to see the 520i and thanking to your suggestion i will see a 525i the same day, i have called the owner right now.
i found a 89 525i in silver, grey velour interior ad original 15 alloy wheels for 2900 euros.
i am in love with that car.
here in italy due to the past up to 2000cc hard taxation, the 525 is a rare model.

M20 (avoid)

M50 (better idea, much faster with better economy and NVH)
