5 Series BMW confirms M-tuned 5 Series diesel - M550dX

The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured and marketed by BMW since 1972. The car is sold as either a sedan or, since 1991, a station wagon (marketed as "Touring"). A 5-door fastback (marketed as "Gran Turismo") was sold between 2009 and 2017. Each successive generation has been given an internal G-code designation since 2017. Previously, a F-code designation was used between 2010 and 2016, while an E-code designation was used between 1972 and 2010. These are used to distinguish each model and generation from each other.

Will this be more like an M5 with a diesel engine or more of a 535D with a M body kit? Meaning will it also have a limited slip diff, dual clutch transmission as well?

It is a 5 Series "tuned" by M, not a 5 Series "concepted" by M as is the M5. It is not an M5 Diesel. It has no LSD because it has xDrive and I would expect 8AUT. Think of it like the Z4 sDrive35is: standard with M bodykit and M tweaked engine.

xDrive and A/T to handle 700nm?

Read today that M division ruled it out as an M car as the 4 wheel drive means the car cannot be lowered. Source Worldcarfans.

^ I reckon that comment was pure marketing or at the very least be referring to xDrive rather than all AWD systems because Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc all offer performance AWD sportscars never mind big heavy saloons.

I love the fact that M ruled out the 4x4, diesel powered, auto gearboxed car because it couldn't be lowered.

Call me cynical (because I know you will anyway), but I suspect the only way BMW could justify the extremely high selling price the M550xd will be (more than the 550i xDrive, and the most expensive 5 series bar the M5) was to associate it with the M division somehow.

Am I blind or is it my mediocre dutch

If I understand the picture correctly it says: M Performance TwinPower with a three-stage turbo incl. VTG.

Nothing about three turbos.

If that is the case, it's just a M-tweaked version of the 535d, nothing more. This could explain the bhp-figure being relatively close to the Alpina D5 BiTurbo, which is another tweaked version of the 535d.

Good notice. It could be that this engine has a similar setup as the coming M3 engine.

I wouldn't read much into it. bmw love to call a 2.0 -> 28i and a 3.0d -> 40d. They also like to call a single turbo "TwinPower Turbo". They also try to cram as many different combinations of letters/words/numbers/etc. into a badge like "z4 sdrive35is" or in this case "m550d xDrive" and shuffle them around as previous example. 1m <> m1 also m3 <> mx5. Dutch is the least of your problems when trying to decifer bmw codes.

The 535i is a twin-scroll SINGLE turbo, yet is referred to as a "TwinPower".

To clear things up for those that are still confused.

This is a single-scroll turbo:

This is a twin-scroll turbo:

Twin-power turbo, on the other hand, is just a marketing term, introduced by BMW in order to describe and promot their turbo technology.

:t-cheers:
