I thought early reports talked about 500hp? Was that just the press getting carried away. ;)

Just some rumours some fanboys were hoping for. Personally I said its never gonna happen. I'm curios how tri-turbo works...and I wonder if Audi/MB are gonna follow.

This engine is capable of achieving 4.4sec. 0-100kmh. in the 3-series. At least it should be as fast as the e92 M3 on a straight line.
4.8 will be great too... I hope there won't be almost any turbo lag and it will be offered with a dual clutch 7speed too and electronic LSD.
Just imagine...

There was a rumor for Audi using tri-turbos a few years back. I remember reading about it in regards to a possible use for the b9 A5. I wouldn't be surprise if it does happen.

It was reported a few years ago that Mercedes were working on a tri-turbo setup (don't recall whether that was diesel or petrol) and since Audi have only just catch up on the bi-turbo BMWs I don't see them having an offering any time soon. This is what I love about BMW, relatively new to diesel compared to either Mercedes or VAG and yet in no time at all they are well ahead.

Just hope that this isn't pushing the boundaries of reliability as well.

MB did have a concept SLK a tri turbo diesel engine back in 2005. The two smaller turbo are placed at the normal position, outside the banks of cylinders, while the bigger 3rd turbo sits in the V, between the 2 rows of cylinders.

^Thanks Monster, couldn't recall what exactly the Mercedes system used fuel wish and if Donkeykong is right then all three of the brands have toyed with the idea though only BMW so far have followed through with the concept.

If it's AWD then it will probably use a torque vectoring diff which is different to that of the M5 and it's unsure whether BMW's DCT is compatible with AWD so it might be another automatic. As for the amount of lag, until it's known as to the setup this will remain purely guesswork but I would imagine it was top of their priorities.

The M550d F10 is not an M Car, it is a BMW 5 Series Diesel Tuned by M. The M5 F10 on the other hand is an M Car, it is a BMW 5 Series Built by M.

Some uneducated journalist thought it was an M5d, for this reason the brought up the 500 PS number. At the very beginnig of the engine build, when the 3.0l I6 Bi-Turbo had 286 PS, the 3.0l I6 Tri-Turbo was aimed at 354 PS (don't rember the number exactly). Of course it was always thought to come close to 400 PS, and now it end up on the rather good side: 381 PS. We need room fr improvement.

It's in Dutch, and while you guys will understand most, one thing I will point out because you're unable to read that:

The exhaust will be in 550i style. Rectangular and in 'Dark Chrome'

If that's true then it's going to be extremely expensive. Pretty much as expensive as an M5, and I don't see that happening?

Will this be more like an M5 with a diesel engine or more of a 535D with a M body kit? Meaning will it also have a limited slip diff, dual clutch transmission as well?
