Hot! BMW AG: What's Next

First time I'm agreeing with this dude.

BMW indeed finds itself in what appears to be a massive identity crisis and is attempting to buckshot its' way into a wider acceptance with an excessively pandering, embarrassingly silly promotion offensive. It's become a manufacturer that has obviously lost its' compass and has become devoid of any sort of aspirational statement. And that is genuinely sad. I hope that a rapid as well as sustainable recalibration can be achieved. I'd love to love the brand once again (as a former fan who has owned 7 over the course of the years) and it's painful seeing it become the increasingly sought target for ridicule and ascerbic jokes.

Design wise, both electric and ice engines, same goes for all of the mighty German trio... Never, ever, Audis, Beemers and Mercs looked uglier than today, with the exception of certain models from all 3 brands, but that's like 40-50% of the whole line up. Generally speaking for all 3 of them, they have never been uglier than today.

In my goddamn opinion of course. :)

The age of the coherent, clearly articulated and recognizably embodied brand statement indeed appears to have passed. The degree of arbitrariness has been continually increasing and differentiation is now primarily defined by grills, lamps, etc. rather than architectures. The mode of promotion of brands has become ridiculous, BMW most recently being a prime culprit. M-B isn't really much better in this aspect methinks. In this particular context, Porsche does things best (emphasis very clearly placed on the product).

Don't have the exact quote, but is seems BMW has anticipated a new design in terms of proportions for the EVs coming after 2025.

Really afraid they follow the EQ route with the pod-shaped cars.

As more manufacturers develop BEVs on dedicated EV platform, the shapes of cars will change and we will have to climates to new aesthetics.

Not sure, then, I prefer a car like an EQE vs a RAV4 or so.

I need to start saving for a Porsche. If not, VW and Audi are the most interesting designs out there to me. Or even Tesla.

See excerpt from the statement of Oliver Zipse today:

The electromobility growth curve will continue to climb between 2025 and 2030:

Our BEVs will see average growth of more than 20 percent per year during this period. To this end, we will be launching a radically new product offering in 2025.
We call it – Die NEUE KLASSE – the NEW CLASS.
I’m sure the name sounds familiar to some of you. BMW made a similarly radical change in its product direction once before – back in the early 1960s. With its “rediscovery of the sporty mid-range car”, BMW experienced an unprecedented upswing for the coming decades. But, most of all, back then, it was about our mindset and sheer determination to change things. We are being just as bold and just as radical again today.
We are asking the question:

  • What does a BMW need to be in 2030?
  • What fits our customers?
  • What does society need – and what does it demand?
For us, the NEUE KLASSE forms the nucleus of rethinking the car from the ground up. We are liberating ourselves from today’s segments and architectures. We are revolutionising the underlying logic of our product offering and combining it with a new vehicle architecture, based on the principle of e-mobility first. An electric drive train based on the hydrogen fuel cell could also be a part of this.
We see the NEUE KLASSE as a combination of:
  • an entirely new IT and software architecture;
  • a newly-developed electric drive train and battery generation;
  • a new level of sustainability, geared towards a circular economy.
Digitisation, electrification and sustainability are the defining characteristics of the NEUE KLASSE.
Circular is already a USP for BMW. We have defined new efficiency standards for the models of the NEUE KLASSE. Resources are scarce and valuable. That is why we are purposely using secondary materials, such as recycled steel, plastics and aluminium.

This means a paradigm shift towards “secondary first” – wherever the quality and availability of materials allow. Circularity is both an aspiration and a promise for us. In developing the vehicles of the NEUE KLASSE, we are ensuring from the outset that the raw materials can be recycled at the end of their lifecycle for use in new vehicles. From “cradle to cradle”.
This is a much broader approach than simply a focus on climate protection. Through economic recycling, we are helping solve the world’s resource problems. No one can do it alone. The circular economy demands cross-sector collaborations. Look out for our vision vehicle at the IAA Mobility. It will provide a first glimpse of our approach to the circular economy and new cooperation models.

In addition to “e-mobility first”, the NEUE KLASSE also aspires to be “digital first”. We are developing a totally new kind of user experience, never before seen in a production vehicle. And, because every region of the world has different digital ecosystems, we are using regionally customisable technology stacks. They tailor the vehicle’s operating system perfectly to local conditions and update it constantly to ensure it is “always fresh”. Our customers can book and configure features throughout their vehicle's lifecycle. We will generate a significant share of our revenues in this way in the future.
The NEUE KLASSE will create a complete emotional experience and secure our long-term profitability. In terms of range and manufacturing costs, we aim to match the level of our state-of-the-art combustion-engine vehicles. The NEUE KLASSE underlines our clear commitment to achieve an EBIT margin within the target range of 8 to 10 percent.
One thing is already certain: The vehicles of the NEUE KLASSE will be true BMWs. They are designed to win over our customers and inspire them.
By 2030, at least 50 percent of our global sales will be fully electric. Over the next approximately ten years, we will be releasing a total of about ten million fully-electric vehicles onto the roads. How quickly each individual market gets there will depend on availability of charging infrastructure. In Asia, for instance, many countries plan the infrastructure from the start when constructing new buildings. Here, too, we want to make faster joint progress in Europe.
The NEUE KLASSE is our global product offering for the markets of the future. We will grow with this unique portfolio and we can handle the necessary complexity. We have confidence in our abilities. We think far into the future.

Our approach is tech-forward.

Thankfully, sexy sport cars and coupes will continue to exist. However practical and high volume cars could look a little bit funny.

Interesting.

He says they'll be showing a vision car at IAA Mobility, which is September. I wonder if that will give an idea of what the new New Class might look like.

Also, I'm glad Zipse is on the same page as me...

I can only imagine what a *new* neu klasse could have been. The i3 was to BMWi what the Isetta was to BMW (a car designed a certain type of mobility), the i8 is to BMWi what the M1 was to BMW M... Those things could have bookended the brand, but what BMWi really needed was a car that was to them, what the Neu Klasse was to BMW... Sure, maybe that's what the i4 will classed as, but it's that meat in the middle of the range that's currently missing IMHO - and I think the immediate public response to the Model III demonstrates how much of an easy sale that could have been for BMW.

:D

I would put my money on this. Mind Audi is showing their Artemis there as well.

No surprises given in that announcement. All of the German companies have said the same thing in different language in regards to their post-2025 strategy.

One doesn't need to read it in order to know what is inside. Such a steril and boring speach. It's like all German CEOs use the same agency to write their speaches. Only copy-paste.

One of the things that makes the 2025 date interesting for BMW is that the G20 3-er will be due for replacement. If the New Class name is to have the same significance as it has historically, and BMW really do genuinely expect to be at 50% EV during the next 3-Series life cycle - then it points to a significant change for the cornerstone of the brand.

I just hope the 3-er doesn't become an egg-shaped blob.

So this talk of the "NEUE KLASSE" is tacitly admitting the strategy of same platform for ICE and BEVs is not working?

BMW made a similarly radical change in its product direction once before – back in the early 1960s
Also in early 2010s, only to abandon it, lose the lead and now be a laggard.

The all-purpose platform has always been meant for the transitional period only. To be more flexible during that period. The future has always been planned to be BEV only with dedicated BEV platforms. Future meaning when legislative deadlines dictate BEV or at least PHEVS only for new automobiles.

So what BEV models will become reality from this "all-purpose platform"? i4 and i7?

The fact that there was/is a huge problem became obvious, when the team responsible for the i program left the company in 2015. All of them disappointed with BMW.

What a silly strategy delaying the all-EV platform when your competitors are already there.
