8 Series (E31) BMW 8er (E31) Picture Thread

Design work of the first generation E31 8 Series began in 1984, with final design phase and production development starting in 1986. The car debuted at the 1989 and was produced until 1999. The BMW 8 Series was designed to move beyond the market of the original E24 6 Series, featuring greater performance and an increased price.
TGood example of the blood, a bit bloody but understandable

Perhaps due to youth I don't remember that recession, I didn't watch the news and around here everything was better than good, in any case sales were extremely slow and they only thought in the short term, they were still a relatively small and family business, their strategies at that time no doubt they turned out very well.

By comparison, the 6 series sold approximately 80,000 units in its life cycle against the 30,000 of the 8 series, a heavy difference to disguise even if you divide it into the years of the cycle.

I remember one of the English motoring magazines parked a Vauxhall Calibra next to the BMW 8 Series and told people what the price differences were. Not one respondent could believe the 8 Series was just so much more expensive or why.

The majority I believe thought the Wayne Cherry designed car was better looking too!🙂

Ouch

It may not have had any effect in South America. In the UK it hit us (as a family) much harder than I realised as a pre-teen at the time, but looking back, not good times at all, but the recession also affected North American markets, as well as much of Europe, and parts of Asia - the key markets for BMW at the time.

But in the same period the SL W129 was extremely successful, which most probably was the biggest problem for the E31.

Given the SL's soft top and smaller engines the appeal was bound to be wider. Perhaps if the timing had been different and BMW had also offered the convertible 8 series, and the 6 cylinder 8 series, the sales numbers would have been kinder. The SL went as 'low' as a 2.8L 6, which BMW had left behind a generation prior in the 6 series. Mercedes opposing vehicle was the CL, which also only offered V8's and V12's, and sold in similar numbers to the 8-er - the SL buyer (for the most part) couldn't cross shop an 8 series.

What was the main reason, the Gulf War or nothing to do with it?

This is a great video about the development of the E31

Lol the intro on this video made me think of Knight Rider with KITT driving in the desert. Was the 8-series the new KITT? Just needs a red LED stripe on the kidneys.

You hit the nail, I remember very well and I almost wrote it here, especially because of a spy pic of the front of the 8 series all black like in the video, I was totally disappointed, it was like seeing the Trans-Am right there, I thought I was going to be a big mistake the design

I had forgotten that video. Especially when the Honda engineers get busted benchmarking the E34.

This is a lovely looking car although the deletion of the pop up lights may not be loved by all.

This Beautiful Widebody BMW 8 Series Hides an M5-Sourced V-10
It's called the 858 CSL and features carbon-fiber body panels, unique fascias, and new headlights.
BMW has only offered two generations of the 8 Series. Its first outing lasted almost a decade in the 1990s before the automaker stored the nameplate for nearly 20 years. The E31 died due to poor sales, ending the coupe’s run, but its sleek styling hasn’t been forgotten. Reyn Speed Shop has created a stunning one-off that it showed to the world during Monterey Car Week.

The car is called the 858 CSL, and it wears several new carbon fiber body panels to help reduce weight and earn the Competition Sport Lightweight badge. There are also new front and rear bumpers, wide boxy fender flares, bespoke headlights, and a vented hood. Unique alloy wheels feature the original BMW center caps. It’s a subtle stylistic upgrade that emphasizes the stock styling while adding a few unique twists.

The one-off also does away with the original engine—BMW offered V-8s and V-12s of various displacements—replacing it with the 5.0-liter V-10 from the E60-generation M5. However, Reyn Speed Shop couldn’t leave well enough alone, so it increased the engine’s size to 5.8 liters with a longer stroke, and paired it with a six-speed manual transmission.

Reyn didn’t break down the modified engine’s new performance numbers, but the engine made 500 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque in the first E60s to roll off the line, which BMW sold from 2005 to 2010. The larger displacement likely equates to even more horsepower, but with Monterey Car Week over, you might have missed your chance to see the 858 CSL in person. But at least it exists. The first-generation 8 Series deserves more love.
