5 Series BMW 5 Series GT (aka PAS) - spy pics & info

The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured and marketed by BMW since 1972. The car is sold as either a sedan or, since 1991, a station wagon (marketed as "Touring"). A 5-door fastback (marketed as "Gran Turismo") was sold between 2009 and 2017. Each successive generation has been given an internal G-code designation since 2017. Previously, a F-code designation was used between 2010 and 2016, while an E-code designation was used between 1972 and 2010. These are used to distinguish each model and generation from each other.
Re: BMW F5 LuxurySportsCruiser - first spy pics!!!

So this is not going to be people mover. So which BMW do people with 3-4 kids get?

It was never intended to be a people mover. Those were just silly rumors in the press.

When the car was described by the BMW officials as a "Space Functional Concept" media automatically labeled it as a "van", or "people-mover" (and portraying it so in their CGIs). :t-crazy2:

X5 will remain a BMW wiht the biggest cabin - being able to carry up to 7 people. That's the maximum BMW can offer.

Want more seats, or room? Sorry. No BMW for you.
Were some people really so stupid - expecting a mini-bus by BMW? :t-hands: :t-crazy2:

For such a vehicle people can turn to the rival brand ... the one with a star on the nose:

Re: BMW F5 LuxurySportsCruiser - first spy pics!!!

Ahaa so it's BMWs answer to the CLS but more spacious.

BMW are not going to rival CLS directly with one of their products. They will pass this job to Audi, VW, Jaguar etc.
BMW think the new 5er & 7er will be coupeish & dynamic enough to attract the customers from CLS. And they also offer a classic 2dr GT: the 6er.

Instead of rivaling CLS directly, BMW are entering completely new segments with their crossover coupes:

X2n (X6, X4, ...): "Sports Activity Coupes" aka SUV coupes

F-series: kinda a "Multi Purpose Coupes"

8-series: large luxurious 4dr "Coupe-Sedan" (in the league of MB CL, AM Rapide & Porsche Panamera) - a segment above CLS.

8-series is necessary car to fill up BMW´s lineup and far more logical step to go than F-series to me:eusa_thin ..At the same time,F-series will attract new ppl to BMW with totally different needs than they are now..and that makes it reasonable smart move to make. For me,honesty,BMW are M-series,Z4,old 8-series..even E30 3-series..you know..As I mentioned before, this new strategy that BMW is pursuing is little worrying to me:( ..

M-series, Z4, 8-series, Z8 ... even 6er. These are low-volume sellers. Niche cars by nature.

Yet BMW AG need to survive - to gain huge revenue numbers to finance marketing activities, R&D, purchasing, production etc. That's impossible with low-volume sellers. Even eg. Porsche & Audi realized that & produce their own SUVs - to gain sales numbers & consequently the revenues.

So, BMW are introducing as many as possible high-volume sellers: they introduced 1er series, and X3 lately. X1 still coming. But now the core segments are more or less filled. So a new segments have to entered, or even created. And now only the niche segments are left. And now a company has to be creative. So BMW is creating the segments like SAC, LSC / LCT, etc. Such segments are a niche right now but have a great potential to develop in more mainstream segments - and then BMW will introduce smaller & more available products: just like they did with X5 -> X3 -> X1 case, and like they will do with X6 -> X4 -> possible X2 in the future. And F6 -> F4 -> possible F2, of course.

Yes, everybody is expecting expensive performance oriented luxury coupes & roadsters from BMW. Even a supercar. BMW can do it right now but they are more interested in securing their future than showing their power. 8er & Z8 are definitely coming - but so are the pioneer cars - the ones creating new perspective segments.

Mind that eg. Audi is much more secured - since it is a part of Volkswagen AG. Same case with Lexus, Infiniti, Acura - all brands with strong parent companies, cheaper R&D, purchasing, production, parts etc.

Eg. Audi AG also administratively got eg. Seat - to additionally boost the revenues of Audi AG.

Even the Porsche is now financially involved in VAG - being a major shareholder there. All to secure strategic projects Porsche & VAG work on.

While BMW AG is an independent company. And that comes with a price: higher R&D, higher purchasing costs etc. Therefore BMW is sentenced to enter new segments, and to cooperate with other carmakers on several projects.

Same case with MB (Daimler AG) - now when Chrysler is gone the revenues will drop dramatically. So MB will be forced to rationalize their model line & production as well: more flexible modular platforms, more shared parts across the line. Even enter new segments - creating new products. And the cooperation with other carmakers in inevitable. Why do you think MB will start to outsource gearbox development? Because its cheaper!!!

Some companies / brands have filthy rich parents - so their future is safe, they're life is much more cosy. While the others have to worm more & be more creative to survive. BMW is one of them - yet luckily for MINI & Rolls they have a rich parent. ;)

PS: if there were no strong Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, Audi, climbing Alfa, Jaguar, Cadillac etc BMW would have more calm & less stressful life - focusing on pure sporty cars - no compact cars, SUVs, crossovers, etc. But unfortunately the real-life situation is different - and BMW have to adopt to survive.

That's the way life goes.

Thx,Eni,this comment is true in every possible way..:usa7uh: Survival of the fittest, that is quite a challenge even for BMW nowdays,I agree..I just hope BMW as a premium carmaker wont lose it´s edge in these new areas of automotive world:t-drive:

@dalab

F700 is a research concept by MB. Not actually showcasing a n upcoming model. Perhaps some design details, but not a entire vehicle.

Yet when I saw F70 for the first time I wondered: "Is perhaps this something where Mk2 R-class is heading?" I don't know. :t-hands:

Re: BMW F5 LuxurySportsCruiser - first spy pics!!!

BMW’s efforts to break the luxury car mould moved into a crucial new phase last week, when its gargantuan new five-door V7 crossover vehicle ventured out on Munich streets for the first time.

Autocar’s spied were on hand to catch the earliest mules for the six-seater and, despite extensive disguise on every exterior panel, the bulky profile of the big five-door is clearly visible, particularly in the photograph that shows it sat next to a new-generation 7-series, which the V7 appears to dwarf (see gallery.)

The BMW V7: like a 7-series, only bigger

Due in the UK in 2009, the V7 will be more estate than MPV, and will be aimed at buyers seeking the luxury and road-going manners of a 7-series but in a more practical and roomier two-box bodyshell.

Based on the 7-series platform, the V7 promises luxury-car ride and handling rather than the 4x4-derived handling of Merc’s R-Class, which is based on the ML. Rear-wheel drive will be standard, four-wheel drive an option.

The design of the V7 is all about interior room and flexibility of use. Its founding philosophy is described in German as “raumfunktionales” or functional space. So the V7 will feature a roomy, five-seat cabin as standard with a three-row version with seats similar to those in the second-generation X5, as an option.

The key to the new BMW’s added practicality is an extended roofline and large liftback style rear end. The taller glasshouse and longer rear-overhang than the X5-based X6 promise to make the V7 a good-deal roomier than the coupe-look 4x4.

So just how big is it?

The V7 is said to stretch beyond 5000mm in length and 1900mm in width, which means it qualifies as a truck in the US.

At this stage, it is unclear whether BMW will follow Mercedes and offer a choice of long- and short-wheelbases each aimed at the European and US markets. This prototype appears to be based on wheelbase longer than the 7-series saloon parked next to it.

Unlike the X6 which will be built alongside the X5 at BMW’s Spartanburg factory in North America from early next year, the V7 will be built next to the existing 5- and next-year’s all-new 7-series at Dingolfing in Germany.

This also means the new BMW will receive all the very latest driveline combinations, including a new turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 that’s under development in Munich, in combination with an eight speed automatic transmission.

Re: BMW F5 LuxurySportsCruiser - first spy pics!!!

they're hiding the roof, so it could be it's getting that double hump like the ps and the Z4 coupé has. Which is very very nice

Re: BMW F5 LuxurySportsCruiser - first spy pics!!!

BMW are not going to rival CLS directly with one of their products.

I know, but describing it as a more spacious CLS seem to be the easiest way to put it, even though they won't be direct competitors. The F5 will be priced a bit higher than the 5er and E-class, right?

Re: BMW F5 LuxurySportsCruiser - first spy pics!!!

I got another important hint regarding the design.

The metal treatment around the tail window will be very similar to the Concept CS:

- with roof line creating a fin-like crease / edge in both D-pillars towards the boot lid (similar yet much milder effect like seen on Ferrari 599 GTB)

- with raised back part of the roof - just above the tail window: creating some sort of balcony over the upper edge of the tail window which appears like eating into the roof; having a function of a spoiler, 3rd brake light carrier, and carrying shark-fin antenna in the middle.

Check Concept CS pics for more graphic impression. :t-cheers:

_______________

@Luw: yes, LSC will be positioned above 5er Touring.

Re: BMW F5 LuxurySportsCruiser - first spy pics!!!

Hmm, is the camoed car the F5 or the F7? It does look as long as a 7 series, which effectively means I wouldn't consider it. The cars today are getting ridiculously big and unpractical in urban areas (of the European type at least). To me, if it was truly a functional space car it would provide more internal room without resorting to increased external dimensions. The challenge is to provide such space without making it a minivan. If the car had the length of the current 5 series, it would interest me a lot more. Actually I'd be very happy if it turns out to be a 5 series fastback with some more ground clearance and a sexier design.

Re: BMW F5 LuxurySportsCruiser - first spy pics!!!

The more car-like approach seen on this prototype seems better-suited to BMW’s values than a full-size van, and although these spy-photos do not reveal all of the car’s design, enthusiasts might be a bit disappointed by the car’s rational design. We expect more or less all 5-series’ engines to be available for the RFK, too

I have never seen a car quite like this, but ok.
Is evo crazy? They honestly think all the old 5-series engines (the V8 that is) go to this car? It'll have a brand new V8, plus a TT version.

Thanks for the pics EMpower! I like what I am seeing. A lot. This car will be freaking hot too, like all new BMWs are lately

I've said it before, if it looks like that I'll be a happy man :icondrool

As you can see from the spy shots, it won't even be close to that. THAT is a Van.
